UPDATE 1:
An arrest has been made:
https://www.police.vic.gov.au/arrest-following-preston-assault
A 32 year old US musician was seriously assaulted after getting off the tram in Preston in Melbourne's inner north, requiring emergency surgery to stop bleeding on his brain, and further surgery for a broken jaw.
The assault was thought to be a random attack, with police describing it as "terrifying" and the worst assault they have seen – after being beaten unconscious, the attacker continued to taunt him, before beating him unconscious a 2nd time around. A full account can be read here (ABC news).
As of April 2nd, the musician has been hospitalised for 6 days and is in a stable condition, but is expected to remain in hospital for several more days. He had planned to return to the US last Saturday.
Friends of the musician believe he had no travel insurance, so any funds donated will go toward his medical and travel costs and ongoing rehabilitation. No instruments or personal belongings were stolen.
