THE BORDER
You've probably heard about what is going on at the US-Mexico border. Thousands of people are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries, only to be further abused by the US government and immigration system for seeking refuge in the United States. These migrants are mostly Central Americans, but many also come from Central Asia, West Africa, and the Caribbean. They are forced to wait for months at border cities, separated from their families upon presenting for asylum, held in hileras , interviewed in unfair conditions, and often detained in prisons or sent back to Mexico for months or years even after they have proven a credible fear of persecution in their home country. The US Immigration system is complicated in purpose, and hard to understand even in one's own native language, migrants are forced to rely on free legal services to get advice.
THE WORK
Al Otro Lado 's Border Rights Project is a direct legal services organization at the US-Mexico border in Tijuana. We provide know your-rights trainings and legal orientation workshops for people wishing to seek refuge in the US. We currently serve migrants at 2 stages in the process: before they have presented and need help preparing for their CFI interviews, and after they have passed their CFI interviews and are preparing to represent themselves in court during their removal proceedings/asylum case . This operation requires volunteers to work in translation, data, documentation, filing, childcare, food service, security, and medical care, in addition to the volunteers giving the legal advice.
THE MONEY
All day-to-day activities at the Border Rights Project are entirely volunteer run. We work for no pay in a dangerous city because unlike many others who wish to do something, we have abled bodies and time and flexibility and freedom and mobility to work in person for this cause. If you choose to help fund our work, we can continue to make a difference on the ground. We're raising this specific money because we rented an AirBnB that many volunteers come through and live in for free. These volunteers have included legal professionals, medical professionals, computer programmers, and community organizers who do valuable work for the cause, but wouldn't be able to be here if they had to pay their way. 1 US dollar = 18.76 Mexican pesos, so please consider donating because literally every little bit helps!
