Since 2002, the Anthropomorphic Literature and Arts Association (ALAA) has been celebrating the best in anthropomorphic (a.k.a. furry/funny animal) entertainment. The Ursa Major Awards have been presented each year for categories such as Motion Picture, Novel, Short Fiction, Comic Strip, Graphic Novel, Game, Illustration, and more. From small beginnings, the event has grown to include a couple of thousand people participating in the nominating and voting for the most popular choices for each category, and the physical Awards have lately grown to match. The venue for the presentations also shifts between conventions each year, and the 2017 Ursa Major Awards will be presented at a ceremony at FurDU in Surfer's Paradise, Queensland, Australia on May 4-6, 2018.
The Ursa Major Awards have recognized and encouraged creators since their inception, and the trophies are now actively sought by some of the finest writers, artists, movie-makers, editors and more in the fandom. However, along with the growth of the event, so have the expenses. These include the cost of the physical awards, shipping them to winners who don't attend the ceremony, and various operating costs. While we wish to continue to improve the Awards, right now we are struggling to keep abreast of the expenses as these have largely been borne by the volunteers in the ALAA. We are reaching out to the furry community and your generosity will help us make the Ursa Major Awards even greater this year, and for the years to come.
Anthrocon's Board of Directors has indicated that they will match up to $350 in donations in the interest of promoting anthropomorphic works, especially writing. The A.L.A.A. acknowledges their generous contribution and hopes that other conventions may help out in some small way.
