Reading today’s headlines, it's hard not to get depressed. International, national and local headlines constantly seem to scream gloom and doom. Will it ever end? Edmund Burke is credited with saying, “All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good [people] to do nothing.” But where to start?

 
Here at Urban Community Outreach’s Drop-In Center, we got started right in our own backyard, in downtown Long Beach. We’ve been helping the unhoused and housing insecure individuals and families for more than 10 years, when we noticed that there were very few public or private agencies that served this population on the weekends, particularly on Sundays.

Seeing a need, we decided to help to fill it. We began by offering our clients cold sandwiches and a safe place to relax and get off of the streets every Sunday afternoon. Over the years, we began adding more services. Now our meals are hot, and in 2017, we provided over 20,000 of them. We also offer more comprehensive services such as frequent health screenings, clothing giveaways, assistance in applying for short-term and long-term housing. We offer a 12-station computer lab that our clients can use to job search, hone their skills, or stay connected with friends and family.
