The Diesel Memorial Project

Donation protected
On November 13, 2013, Diesel, NIU’s live Huskie mascot, brought a smile to college football fans across the country when he gave a spirited "High Five" to celebrate a Huskie touchdown!  Television broadcasters captured the magical moment and broadcast it to a delighted nationwide television audience.  Later ESPN’s Sportscenter also highlighted the moment.  It was a genuine heart-warming display of Huskie spirit that captured the hearts of college football fans from coast to coast.  Diesel is no longer with us, but he will not be forgotten by Huskie football fans.

To honor Diesel, his owner and handler Tom Bonnevier and to honor all past, current and future Huskie mascots, the Diesel Memorial Project has been established. The Project has a goal of raising funds to pay for the sculpting of a bronze memorial statue of Diesel in his famous "High Five" pose. The statue commemorates that event and celebrates the unique association with Huskie football of Diesel and other past, current and future mascots. The statue will be sculpted by renowned sculptor Renee Bemis. An agreement has been reached with the NIU Foundation to place the sculpture in a prominent place outside Huskie Stadium.
