Unterstützung für Mimi

Edit: I added an english version of the campaigns description and changed some parts due to our progression in the treatment. Our lovely german donators got this updated information via the update posts (which will be posted in german and in english from now on).

Hello everyone,

I never thought I’d do something like this but at this point I don’t seem to have a choice. My little kitten Mimi is sick with FIP. FIP is a mutation oft he coronavirus, which is a quite common virus almost every cat has. It’s mostly harmless and most cats who have it never face some issues because of it. Sadly the virus can mutate to a more dangerous form and become FIP. FIP can cause many issues in the cats body, the most known one being the wet form of FIP where due to an inflammation a huge amount of water in the cats belly presses on the organs. Mimi has this „classic“ form of FIP.
It is said that FIP is always deadly.

Unfortunately many people are not aware that there is actually medication available that can cure FIP. Sadly the biopharmaceutical corporation who owns the patent to the medication holds onto it but won’t produce it. The medication was originally developed to help the fight against ebola but other mediacation proved itself more useful. Since the corporation doesn’t have any interest in producing for the veterinary medical field it could take a long time until the medication will be available through vets.

There are a bunch of scientists and activists who try to get the medication produced by said corporation or at least get them to sell the patent. Until then there are alternative and very expensive ways to get the medication. Since FIP is 100% deadly without any medication I wanted to give it a try. As I’m writing this english version of the description Mimi is at week four of taking the medication and feels and acts like a completely healthy cat. She actually should be dead by now but the medication saved her life and will hopefully cure her completely by the end of the treatment. Mimi enjoys life and doesn’t suffer in the slightest right now so I want to keep this going.
If she should relapse and begin to suffer I will of course act responsibly and not make her suffering any longer than it has to be. My responsibility for her as her cat-mom involves not only helping her get healthy again but also letting her go if she should suffer too much.

Until this point (and as written in the original german description of this campaign) I tried to pay the medication out of my own pocket. I just wanted to collect money for the huge vet bills and a possible home euthanasia if Mimi wouldn’t make it. But now she is helathier than we ever hoped her to  be and she is growing and gaining weight. Which is fantastic but also means that the dose and the cost of her medication will go up by a huge amount the next two months.
 

I’m already so happy and overwhelmed by all the support we got the last months but sadly I still need every little bit of help I can get. So if you can give just 5 or 10 euros that would already mean the world to me!

In the original german text I planned on giving money to some organizations who help with FIP research if Mimi wouldn’t make it and I won’t need all of the money I got through this campaign. Now I will actually need more than I originally thought I’d need (which is a good thing since it means Mimi is still alive) so I most likely won’t be able to donate to those organizations. But I encourage everyone of you to do your own research regarding FIP, Bria Fund and the Winn Feline Foundation! The more people know about this illness and the medication the faster the medication can be produced and sold in a hopefully more affordable way.

Please be respectful and don’t start any discussions in the comments. I intentionally didn’t write any detailed information about the medication in here because this is just supposed to be a call for help for Mimi. If you have any questions though feel free to write me a message privately.

ich hätte niemals gedacht, dass ich so etwas tun würde, aber gerade habe ich leider keine andere Wahl. Meine kleine Katze Mimi hat FIP. FIP ist eine Mutation des Coronavirus, ein Virus den ein Großteil aller Katzen haben und der in den meisten Fällen nie auffällig wird oder Probleme bereitet. Leider kann dieser Virus mutieren und führt dann in den meisten Fällen zu einer Bauchfellentzündung. Diese äußert sich durch große Flüssigkeitsansammlungen im Bauchraum und allgemein ist anerkannt, dass diese immer tödlich endet. Andere Auswirkungen des mutierten Virus gibt es ebenfalls, aber meine Mimi ist ganz klassisch von der oben beschriebenen Symptomatik betroffen.

Leider ist wenigen Menschen bekannt, dass bereits ein Mittel entwickelt wurde, um FIP zu heilen. Bedauerlicherweise verstaubt das Patent bei einem biopharmazeutischen Unternehmen in den USA (Gilead Sciences), welches das Patent damals gekauft hat, um es als Medikament gegen Ebola zu verkaufen. Da es bessere Medikamente für an Ebola erkrankte Menschen gibt und Gilead kein Interesse daran hat, im Veterinärbereich zu produzieren, kommt das Medikament schlicht nicht auf den Markt.

Es gibt einige Wissenschaftler und Aktivisten die versuchen, das Medikament nach Tests und weiterer Forschung endlich auf den Markt zu bringen, allerdings kann dies noch Jahre, vielleicht Jahrzehnte dauern. Aus der Not heraus gibt es momentan andere Wege, das Medikament zu beschaffen. Da es sich um eine sonst 100% tödliche Krankheit handelt, war es mir nun den Versuch wert es auszuprobieren. Es gibt Katzen, die durch dieses Medikament bereits seit einigen Jahren ein normales und gesundes Leben führen, trotz einer vorherigen FIP Erkrankung. Solange meine Mimi noch nicht leidet (gerade hat sie keine Schmerzen, es nervt sie nur der doofe Bauch und ihr Fieber schwankt) werde ich versuchen, ob diese Rettung auch für sie funktioniert. Mir ist natürlich bewusst, dass ich die Verantwortung habe, sie gehen zu lassen, wenn sie leidet und die Chance auf schnelle Besserung nicht besteht.

Das Medikament versuche ich weitestgehend aus eigener Tasche zu bezahlen. Allerdings bin ich fast jeden Tag beim Tierarzt und habe jetzt schon einen riesigen Haufen an Tierarztkosten angesammelt. Hinzu kommen noch die Medikamente die meine Tierärztin ihr zur Unterstützung verabreicht und Blutuntersuchungen, Röntgenaufnahmen etc. Sollte ich die Kleine gehen lassen müssen, würde ich sie gerne Zuhause einschlafen lassen, um ihr in ihren letzten Momenten unnötigen Stress zu ersparen.

Meine Rücklage für Katzen-Notfälle ist jetzt aufgebraucht und ich benötige leider finanzielle Unterstützung. Bereits 5 oder 10 Euro decken einiges an Tabletten oder eine Spritze, daher hilft wirklich alles.

Mimi ist mein kleiner Sonnenschein und die liebste Katze die man sich vorstellen kann. Ich wünsche mir von ganzem Herzen, dass sie erwachsen werden darf und werde solange sie lebt alles für sie tun was mir möglich ist.

Sollte Mimi es nicht schaffen (was leider sehr wahrscheinlich ist) und ich eine größere Summe sammeln können als ich für ihre Behandlung benötige, würde ich den Rest des Geldes an Bria Fund spenden. Bria Fund ist eine gemeinnützige Organisation, welche Geld sammelt um die Forschung bezüglich FIP zu unterstützen. Sie ist Teil der Winn Feline Foundation, welche sich generell für Bildung und Forschung im Bereich der Veterinärmedizin um Katzen einsetzt.
