Unser Papa, Opa und guter Freund, Nelson Antonio Espinoza, wäre am Sonntag fast an seinem Essen erstickt. Eventuell durch einen Asthmaanfall beim Essen ausgelöst, gelangte ein Stück seiner Mahlzeit in die Luftröhre und blockierte seine Atmung. Nach Luft ringend versuchte er Hilfe zu holen und stürzte die Treppe herunter. Nachbarn haben ihn blau angelaufen und bewusstlos aufgefunden und sofort seine Schwester aus ihrer Arztpraxis ein paar Häuser weiter herbei geholt. Sie leitete lebensrettende Sofortmaßnahmen ein, bis der Rettungswagen eintraf.
Auf dem Weg zum Krankenhaus erlitt Don Nelson jedoch zweimal einen Herzstillstand. Er konnte reanimiert werden, doch aufgrund seines dramatischen Zustands wurde er vom zuerst angefahrenen Krankhaus abgelehnt. Das nächste Krankenhaus nahm ihn zum Glück auf, der Haken dabei: es handelt sich um ein privates Krankenhaus mit erheblichen Tages- und Behandlungsgebühren (siehe unten: Kosten).
Seitdem er dort am Sonntag eingeliefert wurde, kämpft Don Nelson tapfer um sein Leben - und seine Familie mit ihm. Aufgrund des zweimaligen Herzstillstandes, der undefinierten Zeit ohne Sauerstoff und der durch die Essenspartikel in der Lunge ausgelösten Lungenentzündung, rechneten die Ärzte ihm zunächst nur geringe Überlebenschancen aus und prognostizierten mit höchster Wahrscheinlichkeit erhebliche bleibende neurologische Schäden.
Trotz des dramatischen Ausgangszustands sehen wir voller Hoffnung, wie sich Don Nelsons Zustand immer weiter verbessert. Er ist bereits aus dem künstlichen Koma, in das er aufgrund seines kritischen Zustandes versetzt werden musste, aufgewacht und erkennt sogar die Stimmen seiner Familie. Die Analyse der neurologischen Schäden steht noch aus. Um diese durchführen zu können, musste er zunächst stabilisiert werden. Dass er Familienmitglieder erkennt, auf Fragen antwortet und sogar versucht aufzustehen, gibt uns Hoffnung, dass er sich erholen kann und irgendwann wieder mit uns scherzen und lachen wird.
Leider passierte das Ganze nicht bei uns in Europa, sondern in Nicaragua, der Heimat unseres lieben Papas, Opas und guten Freundes. Nicaragua ist das zweitärmste Land Lateinamerikas und befindet sich zusätzlich seit April 2018 im Krisenzustand. Die Versicherung, die mit keiner Europäischen vergleichbar ist, sei pleite und verweigert jegliche finanzielle Unterstützung. Die Familie vor Ort muss selbst um ihr finanzielles Überleben kämpfen und schafft es nicht, die Rechnungen zu bezahlen. Ein Teil der Kosten für diese Woche konnte durch einen Kredit gestemmt werden. Die Prognose der Ärzte ist jedoch, dass der Patient noch mindestens 10 Tage auf der Intensivstation bleiben muss.
Eigentlich haben wir uns alle schon auf seinen Besuch hier in Deutschland im April gefreut, es sollte nur noch der Flug gebucht werden! Seine kleine Enkelin Sophia fragt seitdem jeden Tag: „Wie geht es Opa? Und wann kommt er endlich zu uns?“

Wir, Nelson & Nadine, Antonio Espinozas Sohn und seine Freundin, sind selbst noch Studenten und versuchen nun hoffungsvoll mit gofundme die rasant ansteigenden Kosten bewältigen zu können und Don Neslons Weiterbehandlung sichern zu können.
Deswegen brauchen wir dringend Ihre & Eure finanzielle Unterstützung, um die Krankenhausrechnungen begleichen zu können, damit Don Nelson weiterhin behandelt wird und gesund werden kann.
Die Kosten dafür belaufen sich dabei pro Tag auf ca. 700 USD (Aufenthalt auf der Intensivstation, Behandlung durch den Arzt), hinzu kommen Extrakosten für spezielle Medikamente. Die Kosten für den Transport und die Erstaufnahme beliefen sich bereits am ersten Tag auf 3.000 USD. Mittlerweile ist der Betrag auf über 7000 USD angestiegen, wovon die Familie in Deutschland und Nicaragua gemeinsam bisher nur die Hälfte decken konnte. Die aktuelle Prognose der Ärzte besagt außerdem, dass sich der Aufenthalt voraussichtlich noch um mindestens 10 Tage verlängern wird. Last Sunday, our dear father, grandfather and good friend, Don Nelson Antonio Espinoza, almost chocked on his lunch. Possibly caused by a sudden asthma attack, a part of his meal got into his trachea and impeded his respiration. Gasping for breath and desperately searching for help he fell down the stairs on his way outside. Luckily, he got his neighbours attention who immediately called Don Nelson’s sister, who is a doctor and lives nearby. Don Nelson had already lost consciousness and had turned blue. His sister performed life-saving emergency measures until the ambulance arrived.
On his way to the hospital in the ambulance he suffered two cardiac arrests. Due to his dramatic health condition the first hospital refused to examine him. Finally, a private hospital in Managua accepted him for treatment. The key problem here: they demand considerably high costs per day for the treatment (see costs below).
So since Sunday Don Nelson is fighting for his life – and the whole family along with him. Because of the repeated cardiac arrests, an undefined period of time without oxygen and pneumonia on top, doctors gave little hope for his recovery and predicted significant and lasting consequential damages.
Despite the dramatic initial situation, we are full of hope, as we can see that Don Nelson’s state of health is constantly improving. He has already awoken from the artificial coma, which the doctors had to put him in due to is dramatic health condition, and is starting to recognize his family members and is talking to them. However, we are still waiting for the results of the neurological examination. According to the doctors, he first has to be stable before initiating the examination. Nevertheless, his positive development gives us a lot of hope that we will get the chance to joke and laugh again with our lovely father, grandfather and dear friend.
Unfortunately, the accident didn’t happen close to us in Europe, but far away in Nicaragua, Don Nelson’s home country. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin-America and additionally is having a hard time from the political crisis starting in April 2018. Far from being comparable with our social system in Germany and Europe, the assurance refuses any support and the local family also is in difficult (financial) circumstances. Part of this week’s costs have been covered by a credit. However, doctors forecast that the patient will have to stay in the intensive care unit for at least 10 days.
This happened when we all hoped to meet our dad, grandfather and friend again very soon, as he planned to come and visit us in Germany next month. He was about to book his flight and looking forward to spend a short holiday with his family in Germany! Since his horrible accident, Don Nelson’s little granddaughter is constantly asking about her grandfather. She can’t wait to see him, and hopes so much to see him again soon. Please help her to get a chance to meet her grandfather, the way she knows him by supporting his treatment in Nicaragua.
We are Nelson & Nadine, Don Nelson’s son and his girlfriend. As we are only students at the moment with no considerable income, we are trying to collect funds by lancing this campaign with gofundme. We really hope to be able to cover a part of the continuously increasing costs for our father and dear friend’s treatment.
That’s why we urgently need your support: The costs for Don Nelson’s treatment amount to 700 USD per day (including staying in the ICU and the doctor’s service). Costs for medication come on top. An amount of 3.000 USD was already charged for transport and initial reception. The current amount already goes beyond 9.000 USD, whereof 60 % have already been covered by friends’ and families’ immediate donations. However, the amount is still constantly increasing by at least 700 USD and Don Nelson will have to be treated intensively for at least 10 more days and will certainly need further medical treatment after that.
