Back in 2010 I was fortunate to volunteer at a charitable outdoor education centre that specialised in inclusivity and helping young people learn life skills, gain confidence in themselves, and ultimately have fun using adventure sports as a medium. 2011 I was offered employment as an instructor - and continued to work there until 2015. I made the hard decision to leave due to a health issue which lead to bouts of depression, making it harder and harder to do my job.
The health issue is nasal polyps; which I've suffered with for years, and frustratingly mine are very aggressive. Multiple surgeries and various doses and a variety of steroid treatments mean that for the passed year it's been under control. I'm wanting to get back to do what I love, and dare I say it, something I feel I am good at.
So that’s the backstory to where I am now. This is the future, and why I’m here asking for a little support. My ultimate goal is to carry on where I left off; helping disadvantaged young people in all forms using my passion for adventure and the outdoors. But it can be very expensive to get the necessarily qualifications and equipment. To get there again I’ve decided to head to University; of Wales, Trinity St. David specifically, where they offer Outdoor Adventure Education BA (Hons) which will help me relearn the majority of my atrophied skills. I'm very grateful to have received an unconditional offer from them.
There are a few challenges – and that’s why I’m here. I’ll be moving up to South Wales from Cornwall with my wife. She'll be in full time employment to support us both, and I’d be using bursaries, loans, part time jobs to contribute where I can. I’m looking for any help that I can get to put towards equipment for the course, the expeditions and side activities that will help towards various activity specific qualifications, and finally to help with rent (student accommodation will be out of the question) and living costs.
Anything you can spare will go a long, long way. If there’s nothing you can offer financially then please share this around to others.
It’s far too easy to get caught up in life and lose yourself along the way. And life is far too short to follow a career you that doesn’t make you happy. Please consider supporting me a little to help me get back into a worthwhile career helping young people get back on their feet.
