A few months ago I was diagnosed with “Acute Aortic Valve Stenosis” which means that I have a defective aortic heart valve. This condition is not treatable with medication. The only course of action is open heart surgery to replace the defective valve.
Unfortunately, my heart problem went undiagnosed for more than ten years. My cardiologist tells me that I’m now in “rapid decline.” Without the surgery I have only one or two years left to live.
As if this wasn’t enough to deal with, I was also diagnosed with “Severe Periodontal Disease.” Gum disease is a major cause of post operative infection following heart surgery. In fact, my cardiologist says that this kind of infection increases the risk of death by 50%. So, I have to have all of my teeth pulled out and get dentures. My heart surgeon will not perform the heart valve replacement until my dentist signs off that my gum disease has been taken care of!
The dental work is underway and I'm hoping, if all goes well and I can raise the funds quickly, to schedule the heart surgery for February or March 2016.
Health insurance will cover most of the medical and dental expenses, but I’m already incurring uncovered costs and I’m certain there will be more.
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I’M FACING AND THE REASON I’M REACHING OUT TO MY FAMILY, FRIENDS, CO-WORKERS AND COMMUNITY IS:
I WILL BE OFF WORK FOR AT LEAST 3 MONTHS!
I have a low paying job which provides no paid time off for any reason. To make matters worse, as my health has deteriorated, I’ve become unable to work a full time schedule. I struggle from paycheck to paycheck and come up short every month. Three months with no income will lead to eviction from my apartment, utilities shut-off and overall devastation.
Because I live alone and have no children, I do not qualify for any governmental cash assistance. The charities I’ve contacted have programs to help people after they’ve lost everything, but nothing to prevent that from happening.
We are all living in financially hard times. I understand that you all have your own families and living expenses to take care of. I would not want (or expect) anyone to add to their own financial stress on my account. It is my hope that I can find enough folks out there who are able to contribute any amount (large or small) to get me through this difficult time without losing everything.
Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated!
