      Uncaged Art Traveling Exhibit

The Tornillo Child Detention Center, located in Tornillo, Texas near El Paso,  housed over 2,300 teens at its peak.  When the camp was closed at the end of January, 2019, Father Rafael Garcia, a priest who had conducted masses at the camp, saw that artworks the children had produced were being thrown away.  He was able to save 29 artworks.  An exhibit of the salvaged works, curated by Dr. Yolanda Lyeva and Dr. David Moro, of the Museo Urbano in El Paso, opened this past April at the University of Texas, El Paso.

Our team (Glen Ring, Maryellen Dunn, Ruth Sanchez and Ryan Linehan) will create a travelling version of this exhibit and present it in our home states and beyond.  Dr. Lyeva has shared high quality digital images with us.  We seek financial assistance to print and frame these images.   We must enlarge 29 images and purchase frames for them.  We will also produce text that will provide context for the show.  This text will be reproduced on large panels and included in other materials such as programs that will be available at the exhibits.   Our first show is already scheduled at the Kimball-Jenkins Estate in Concord, NH during the month of September.  When that show is completed, the exhibit will travel to Maine, Massachusetts, New York and possibly further!

The children incarcerated at Tornillo produced carefully rendered images and three dimensional pieces that shared their inner visions and memories of home.  Their vibrant creations counter the dehumanizing narrative our government pushes about these kids, about Latin American people.

We plan to use our exhibits in several ways.  We believe that people who see the exhibit will be deeply moved by the images and the tragedy that unfolds daily for young people who’ve traveled to our country seeking safety.  Texts accompanying the pictures will explain our country’s policies where children are still separated from family members and sent to prison though they’ve committed no crime.  The exhibit is also a fundraising effort.  We will be able to contribute to organizations recommended by Dr. Leyva.  Donations will be sent to the three organizations whose links appear below.
