Un chien Mira pour les enfants

Je m’appelle Virginie Abat-Roy et je suis enseignante dans une école élémentaire publique francophone d'Ottawa. J’ai commencé mon doctorat en éducation en septembre 2017 et j'étudie les retombées de la présence d'un chien d'assistance en milieu scolaire inclusif.

À compter de cet hiver, je serai accompagnée d’un chien d’assistance complètement formé pour le milieu scolaire provenant de la Fondation Mira. Cet organisme est reconnu internationalement, et offre des chiens aux personnes vivant avec un handicap depuis plus de 60 ans. Ce chien a suivi la même formation que les chiens d’assistance pour enfants ayant un diagnostic d’autisme. Les bénéfices de leur présence sur les enfants sont nombreux : meilleure attention, plus grand sentiment d’appartenance et d’estime de soi, diminution de l’anxiété, augmentation du bien-être à l’école, meilleure intégration des enfants à besoins particuliers, etc. Déjà plus de 8 de ces chiens sont présents dans des écoles du Québec et vivent des histoires de succès. Un chien d'assistance Mira coûte en moyenne 30 000$ à former. Dans notre cas, je devrai couvrir tous les suivis vétérinaires. Les suivis de formation sont offerts par les spécialistes chez Mira.

My name is Virginie Abat-Roy and I’m a French elementary school teacher, currently working in Ottawa. I am undertaking a PhD in education and my doctoral research encompasses the effects of a school based service dog in the inclusive setting.

Starting this Fall/Winter, I will be accompanied by a service dog fully trained for the school environment by the internationally-recognized Mira Foundation.  This organization offers service and assistance for people living with a disability for over 60 years. This dog went through the same training as assistance dog for autistic children. Benefits observed by the presence of these dogs in the classroom include but are not limited to: higher levels of concentration and longer attention span, greater sense of belonging and higher self-esteem, reduced anxiety, increased wellbeing in the school and classroom environment, etc. 8 of these dogs have already successfully been integrated in Quebec's schools. This dog is worth $30,000 of training expenses, as well as insurance and any further specialized training the dog may require. The Mira Foundation will cover the follow up trainings and I have to cover the veterinary fees.

I am very excited to announce that beside the cost of the dog, all other expenses are covered by very generous sponsors :
