UM FLAT CHICKEN COOP

Donation protected
Hello all!

My name is Sophie Hainline and I am Co-Director of the UM FLAT, the University of Montana's Forum for Living with Appropriate Technology. We are a living and learning demonstration house for our campus and community and host workshops, workdays and other events to engage students with hands-on practical skills while collaborating with the Missoula community. When I say "we" I am referencing the 6 undergraduate and graduate students that make up our home.

I am hoping to raise money for a new chicken coop, currently we have 6 chickens that are in need of a warm and comfortable home. Their current residence is made of plywood and does not protect them from the harsh Montana winters. My hope is to raise enough money, and to collaborate with local organizations, to offer a chicken coop building workshop as well as a new home for our chickens.

When I was 10 my dad bought me 14 baby chicks, thinking many of them would not make it to adulthood. All but one survived and I spent my childhood raising 13 chickens and selling the eggs to our local community. Ever since I have had a love for chickens! Between studying in the spring you will often find me hanging out in the coop getting to know the personalities of each of our flock members and ushering them in the fall out of our potato and strawberry patches.

Our hope is to build a home for our chickens before the harsh winter arrives, the date for construction is November 8th, which is quickly approaching.

Please help the FLAT construct a new home for our lovely ladies, and allow us to provide a hands-on experience for our local community that will last a lifetime!
