High school is hard enough. When a student is bullied it becomes unbearable.
Ulises Gomez was born on 12/17/02 in Los Angeles, CA to a single mother who is in the United States as part of the DACA program. (Full disclosure: Ulises’ mother is the wonderful nanny to my two daughters)
In search of more affordable housing the family moved to Atascadero and Ulises began his freshman year at Atascadero High School. From the very beginning other students began tormenting him and chanting “Go back to Mexico!” Ulises never retaliated but often came home crying and the stress of the situation started making him physically sick. Ulises and his mother tried to get help from the school. At best, the limited help from teachers and administrators was ineffective. In reality, Ulises and his mother felt totally ignored and helpless.
Luckily, Ulises only had to endure this for a couple months because he was given the opportunity to attend Mission College Prep. He started classes in November of his freshman year. The effect of this move was profound. He quickly settled in and immediately began participating in team sports and attended the first school dance. He often wakes up early to lift weights in the school gym before class so he can positively contribute to the school’s soccer and football team.
Mission Prep has become a sanctuary for Ulises. He feels safe at school and therefore, has made friends, can play sports, and enjoy all the extracurricular activities that the school has to offer.
Ulises has qualified for substantial financial aid (his discounted rate is $5,000 when regular tuition is $14,000) but we still need to raise money to pay for the remaining tuition for his sophomore, junior, and senior year of high school.
Sophomore year: $5,000 yearly tuition + $595 registration fee
Junior year: $5,000 yearly tuition + $595 registration fee
Senior year: $5,000 yearly tuition + $595 registration fee
Total Goal = $16,785
Any money raised above this goal will be used to fund high school scholarships at Mission College Prep for similarly situated students.
