Getme to the Inequalities Institute

Donation protected

In 2010 'equality' was meaningfully rolled back for British mothers by austerity. I was one of those British mothers. As a qualified social worker and ex civil servant, I understood the relationship between social policy, inequality, our economic system and political narratives, so I recorded how that happened. Not just how austerity hit women like me, but how it was sold by our political machinery as they transitioned to a digital landscape.

While I did this economists all over the world began to grapple with the failure of economics to understand financial instability, debt, how our institutions function, and inequality. Last year the London School of Economics announced the new Inequalities Institute, today announcing that Thomas Piketty has been appointed as a Professor there.

I applied for a place as soon as it was announced, so that I could train to do a Phd looking at whether equality was rolled back for working class mothers, or institutionalised in the post war period. Whether the perpetual financialisation of our economy as a response to financial instability inherent in our system, means that inequality actually reached its natural conclusion in this political economic settlement. It will be looking at the Keynesian institutions of the welfare state concerned with social reproduction, and their relationships to the primary institutions of media, finance and politics.

I should hopefully encompass the relationship between financial instability and inequality by looking at the one faultline I understand completely. I will be one of the first students at the newly established Inequalities Institute.

Thanks to this Gofundme my tuition is now paid in its entirety. Please do not donate any more money, and thank you so much for sharing, donating and caring enough to do so.

My blog Idge of Reason, covers the journey I took over five years to reach this point. https://idgeofreason.wordpress.com
It was shortlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2012 as Defytheeconomy.wordpress.com.

If you can share this, or contribute, I would be very grateful for the opportunity to be part of the reformation of economics that will ensure that what happened in the last five years doesn't happen again.

All contributors are entitled to a jar of chutney and a copy of my masters dissertation and phd thesis.
