We are Amy and Benard Serunyigo and we are the founders of Uganda for Her Initiative (U4H), a non-profit organization working to empower vulnerable young girls and women in Uganda.
Imagine being 14 years old and unable to attend school because you have your period and no sanitary products to use. For Joanitah, this is a reality. Joanitah would use rags, leaves, and dung to try to lessen the bleeding and to mask the appearance of blood on her school uniform. Despite tying a sweater around her waist to cover the menstrual stains on her uniform, she would still receive unwanted stares and teasing comments from her peers.
Because Joanitah had to endure this experience on a monthly basis, she saw no other choice but to leave school. Joanitah is not alone, her story highlights the experience of many young girls growing up in Uganda. Only 26% of Ugandan parents talk to their daughters about menstruation and puberty, as these topics are still considered taboo. Furthermore, 28% of adolescent Ugandan girls miss an average of 4 school days per month due to their period, which contributes to poor school performance and an increase in dropout rates.
