Who we are:
UBECI (United to Benefit Ecuadorian Children International) Foundation is both a non-profit and non-governmental organization operating in Quito, Ecuador. The UBECI team works directly with street children in the markets of Southern Quito. Our goal is to eliminate child labor and social/legal discrimination. To achieve our goal, we promote educational and recreational activities for the street children to help develop their cognitive, motor, and socio-affective skills. We assist close to 600 children and adolescents in 6 different markets.
Our work aims to break the vicious cycle of poverty the street children of Quito endure by providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in their lives. Working directly with street children allows UBECI to work towards alleviating the larger problem of child poverty.
Christmas Campaign:
During the Christmas season the majority of the street children do not partake in Christmas festivities that most children around the world have the luxury of experiencing. Most of the street children are void of Christmas spirit because they must work alongside their parents and as such they do not understand the joyous feeling of the Christmas season. This particular situation is why we are raising money for our annual Christmas Campaign. Our hope is to offer each child a small gift so that they can feel special and loved on Christmas. We are also hoping to implement a little Christmas party during the week of Christmas with various Christmas activities, songs, games, and some food/drinks.
How the money will be used:
The money will be used to buy around 600 small gifts for the children and adolescents. The left over funds will be to used for our Christmas parties in each of the six markets.
Ideally, we would like to have the funds by December 1st so that we have the time to buy the little presents as well as organizing the Christmas festivities.
Why aiding street children is so important:
Street children are exposed with minimal protection to the harshest elements of physical, social, and economic environments. This life is absent of supervision, education, nurturance, and security. As street children grow up in this environment, the street becomes their “home” and in turn, their values are shaped into a “street ethic”. This specific context means that street children are absent from the two most important institutions of socialization both the family and the school.
According to UNICEF, 40.7% of children and adolescents in Ecuador are living in situations of poverty. UBECI has been working directly with these children since 1999 in order provide them the opportunity to succeed in school and in life.
UBECI is working on a daily basis to reduce the working hours of street children and allowing them to experience the same joys in life as their counterparts around the world.
