Emma's Rehibilitation Fund

Donation protected
My name is Ellen and I am setting this go fund me page up for my dear friend Emma. She is a single mum to two boys aged 8 and 4 and is used to living a very full independant and vibrant life without having to rely on anyone for help.

However 4-5 weeks ago Emma fell down the stairs at home but she felt that she had not done too much wrong and took some regular pain relief. Following a scheduled appointment with physiotherapists, where they could not carry out her treatment due to the positioning of her spine, she was sent to Medway Hospital with a letter requesting that an MRI was to be carried out immediately. This did not take place. Instead an Xray was done where they could not find anything wrong and she was sent away with pain relief and told to rest up. At this point Emma was experiencing quite alot of pain so she persevered for a couple of days following the doctors advice from the hospital. After such she went for a second opinion at Maidstone hospital as the pain was becoming too much. At this hospital the doctors diagnosed a broken coccyx bone. Finally we though we had an answer as to why the pain was so bad. Emma was informed that not much could be done to repair the the coccyx and that she she was to rest up and take the pain relief that she was prescribed. Three days after this we returned to Maidstone Hospital as the pain was getting much worse and Emma started to expereince tingling and numbness in one of her legs. She was also having to really concentrate to go to the toilet. All of this was explained to the nurse who referred us to the GP at the hosptal. The GP carried out an examination and simply explained to Emma that this is all about pain control as the broken coccyx will repair over time. On our merry way we were sent with more alternative pain relief.  For the following two weeks Emma did her best to persevere with such but it was just getting worse.  At one point she went to her personal GP to be prescribed some more medication. She repeated such symptoms, again to be told perservere and maybe try to do a little bit of walking and driving!

On the 8th April 2016 Emma went back to her GPs again as the pain was out of this world, she saw a different GP who did an examination which in turn left her unable to walk. An ambulance was called and she was was rushed back to Medway Hospital. Finally an MRI was carried out - no broken coccyx! The doctors here tried to send her home again. Her friend and she insisted that she was kept in and to wait for a second opinion. The next morning Emma was rushed to King College Hospital in London for emergency back surgery to be be perfomed. We was all in total shock. It turns out that she had a shattered disc in her back that was compressing impotant nerves that control anything from the waist down. How on earth could she have been have been misdiagnosed so many times after presenting herself to various different health professional is a questions that bugs us all!

As is stands Emma has had two major surgeries performed within the space of two weeks. The first surgery was a disectomy , where part of the disc was taken away to relieve the compression of the nerves. Following this surgery Emma could not feel her legs to walk and cannot feel to go to the toilet. This is because so much nerve damage has been done due to being left so long without the right examinations taking place. This week a second surgery has performed known as a laminectomy as the first operation was not as successful as the surgeons had hoped. This surgery has completely taken away the compression of the nerves but right now Emma is unable to walk and is using a wheel chair as she cannot feel her legs at all. She is also on a special machine that feeds morphine to the body every ten minutes to keep the pain under control. The doctors are unable to say for certain whether she will regain feeling again, if she does the time timescale to which this happens is very individual, it could take weeks or months. But on the other hand she may not regain any feeling at all. There is no definite answer.

In order for Emma to recover the doctors want to send her to a specialist hospital in Oxfordshire where she would be an impatient for six months, she would receive care for rehibilitation.  As it stands she has already not seen her children for two weeks and they have not seen thier mummy. For these guys to be apart is unheard of, it is them against the world, Emma and her boys. However there is an alternative option and this is the reason behind my setting up of this page. The alternative option would mean that her sons would be able to have thier mummy at home.

So the alternative would be that Emma is transferred to a hospital in Orpington for 10 days - 2 weeks where part of her care would be carried out. After this she would then be transferrerd as an outpatiet at the Oxfordshire hospital. However in order to do such she would need to fund the expenses for this herself. So this would include the travel costs to the hospital and home as well as well as staying near the hospital so that she can recieve this care. We have been told that she would need to be going to the hospital either twice a week or once every two weeks for the weekend. The money raised through this page would help to do this and would avoid her staying in hospital for such a lengthy period of time. It would also mean that the boys would have thier mummy at home opposed to hundreds of miles away not knowing when they may see her next.

We are uncertain how long the road to recovery will be or how much it will cost but we know that it will be a long road. Words cannot describe how much it woud mean for the alternative option to be a possiblity. All and any donations will be greatly recieved, We just want our bubbly and vibrant friend back and the boys need thier mum.

I thank anyone who takes the time to read this page and to donate. It really does mean so much. Ellen xxx
