Type 1 Trek

Did you know that 300,000 Canadians are living with Type 1 Diabetes? Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. While insulin injections or infusion allow a person with T1D to stay alive, they do not cure the disease, nor do they necessarily prevent the possibility of the disease’s serious effects.

I am one of the 300,000. I’ve lived with Type 1 Diabetes for twenty-one years. Insulin isn't a cure, it's life support & I want to be cured, not managed.

Living with T1D is a constant challenge; however, treatment options are improving every day and people with T1D can lead full and active lives. That is why this year I am biking 860kms of the Trans Canada Trail from June 9- June 23, 2018 to raise awareness and funds for T1D research. I will be departing from Ottawa, Ontario & biking back to my hometown of Kitchener, Ontario.

The cost of this trip is going to be approximately $3,000 - $4,500. Because I am a T1D & this is a rather unusual, slightly risky undertaking, my uncle will be spotting me along the way. Not only has he generously donated 2 weeks of his time but he will also be covering the cost of gasoline. I’ve purchased a bike & several other items with my own funds; out of pocket expenses are currently around $1500 & I am happy to pay for these; however I do need help covering the rest of the expenses & raising funds for research.

The trip is 14 days long and 15 nights on the road will make expenses add up quickly.

The estimated break down of the remaining costs is as follows:

Hotels: $1,500 - $1,700
Biking, safety & survival gear: $500 - $1,000
Food: $500 - $700
Miscellaneous/unforeseen expenses/emergencies: $500 - $1000

Currently I have received $1,250 in funds from local businesses who have generously sponsored me to help cover the costs of Type 1 Trek. My hope is to have hotels & gear donated or discounted. Whatever is donated or discounted will be taken off the costs & donated directly to the JDRF at the end of the trek.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) will be the recipient of the remaining funds once the cost of the trek is covered; either through sponsorship's or your donation.

A year ago I started training & planning for this trek; I am employed, run a small business & manage a 24/7 medical condition. I have never undertaken such a positively overwhelming, challenging & exciting expedition.  All of me is going into this.

Living with T1D means I will never have an ordinary life, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t have an extraordinary one. I have never been one to let living with T1D stop me from doing anything; my motto is, “I can do anything except make insulin.”

However, this doesn’t mean that I don’t need help. Right now I need the help and support of as many people as possible; not only to accomplish this goal, but to raise awareness and help further the chances of a cure for T1D.

Type 1 Trek is one woman with passion undertaking a huge goal & I can't accomplish this without the support of my family, friends, strangers & other people effected by this disease.

You never know who suffers from an invisible chronic illness & support doesn’t just come in the form of financial help, share what you like. I’m expecting a challenging, interesting 2 week trek through the beautiful country we live in; I hope you’ll follow along on the journey!
