TY CELF-COMMUNITY ART GALLERY PORT TALBOT

Donation protected
"Tŷ Celf is a community gallery set in the heart of Port Talbot. As a response to the latest Banksy work that has graced Port Talbot, the gallery will focus on work made by the community, for the community and allow a space to express the community ideas and spirit. The gallery will run from June the 8th 2019 to August the 17th 2019, with many workshops of different forms of art for all ages as well as a community café. The Gallery will have a range of different and diverse forms of art that will create a dynamic and progressive space for the community. "

Hello, my name is Aled Williams. I am the artistic director of Tŷ Celf, as well as a local resident from Port Talbot and a recent graduate from Central Saint Martins. I have since graduated, traveled the world and worked in various practices in the arts.  If a lot of you weren’t aware but I assume you do, there are many various successful artists and actors that a have come out of Port Talbot such as Andrew Vicari, Micheal Sheen and also designs like Ed Thomas and Sion Crowley. I wish for these various artists and practitioners to be displayed for the community and more importantly the younger generations to be inspired by their work.

I have been working many months now to create a community gallery for Port Talbot as such came Tŷ Celf. I have worked with many people up to now such as Nigel Hunt, Meyrick Sheen, and the Rich history society. I have got to a stage in which I have artist secured and a scheme of work prepared for an exciting pop-up summer gallery exhibition. With great collection of international work, national work and community work.

My next stage is to secure funding for this project. I am looking for you to help me with this project. I urge you to help me make this a reality. Hopefully, change the dynamic of the town. Change Port Talbot for a better future.

Our biggest problems are funding. Trying to work with Neath Port Talbot has been problematic. A lack of pride and care for the town and its development culturally. So I ask you the residence of the town, the people who have a connection to the town, stand up and help create this a reality.

If you can spare a £1 or £5 anything will be amazing! The idea is simple if the local government won't fund community projects then it is up to the people of the town to fund ideas and spaces that will help the quality of life in their town for the town to succeed. Which that is what the gallery is all about, community power and community spirit.  Power to the people!

Yours gratefully,

Aled Williams
