Randolph Middle School Japan Trip

Donation protected
This June 10 students from Randolph Middle School are heading to Shizikuishi, Japan.   The students and their  teacher-chaperones will spend the next several months preparing for this exchange of cultures. The students will also work with their parents to raise funds to cover all of their expenses including air and train fare, hotel, and food.

Some of the events this group anticipate for fund raising include a Memorial Day weekend tag sale, multiple car washes, a sponsored dance, a walk-a-thon, ice cream sales, T-shirt sales, bottle drives, bake sales, and yard maintenance.

Any amount of funding assistance towards this trip from you would be greatly appreciated. The Friends of the Randolph-Shizukuishi Exchange Project (EIN 205373812) is a non-profit public benefit corporation and all donations are tax deductable.

The Randolph-Shizukuishi Exchange Project began in 1992 when a Randolph Vermont native then teaching English in Shizukuishi, Japan facilitated a cultural visit of Shizukuishi junior high students and teachers to Randolph Union Middle School.  For the next nine years, delegations of students from Shizukuishi and their teachers came to Randolph eight times for a week-long home stay and school visit. In 2000, the Town of Shizukuishi invited Randolph Union Middle School to send a comparable delegation to Japan. Since 2000, Shizukuishi students have continued to come to Randolph every winter and Randolph Union Middle School has sent delegations to Japan every other year fostering a rich history of cultural sharing between two very different parts of the world.

Each trip involves travel from Vermont to Tokyo, sightseeing in Tokyo, train travel to Shizukuishi, a home stay in Shizukuishi, and, if possible, travel to another site of cultural interest before returning to Vermont.  Shizukuishi itself is a small town located in Iwate District, Iwate Prefecture, in the northern part of Japan. As of February 2014, the town had an estimated population of just over 17,000. It is very similar to Randolph given its small town community life style, mountainous geography; and close proximity to numerous ski areas and resorts, and working dairy farms.
