Two parents, two hospitals, one family tragedy

My family needs your help. In the space of one short week, everything about our lives got overturned, and now, we're trying to pick up the pieces. We can't do this on our own.

A few weeks ago, my mother fell and wasn't able to get up or call for help for almost 20 hours. When we finally got EMT out there, they rushed her to the ER, where they found a brain tumor on a CT scan. When they took her to a larger hospital in Memphis, they found a mass in her lung as well. They recently removed a metastatic tumor the size of my palm from her frontal lobe, and we are currently waiting to see the kind and extent of the cancer to know what our next steps are. I have no idea when or even if my mother will be able to come home. I have no idea how long we have left with her.

This alone was devastating. Then, three days after my mom's brain surgery, my poor father was involved in a near-fatal car accident coming home from visiting her in the hospital. Their car was totaled, he broke several ribs and punctured a lung. He was lucid the following day, and we thought he was going to be okay, until he had a seizure and lapsed into unconsciousness and toxic shock. He fought so very hard for three weeks, but he never got out of the trauma ICU. He passed away a few days ago.

It's hard to see your parents broken and bleeding and not even know if they'll be okay. It's even harder when your family's scattered across the country. My two brothers and I do not live close to my parents: I'm in Georgia, one brother is in Indiana, and the closest is still 5 hours away in Hattiesburg.

I've increased our fundraising goal because things have taken a sharp turn for the worse, and I know we aren't in a place where we can handle those expenses alone. We may need to place my mother in hospice or palliative care.  For now, I need to hire a private caretaker for her until I can get death benefits and insurance sorted out. Our parents have taken good care of my brothers and me all our lives. They've always put their children first. Now, it's our turn. But we can't do this alone, so I am asking you for help. We lost our father, but we're determined to do everything we can not to lose our mom too.

We are heavily burdened by misfortunes right now, but we are wealthy in friends. I'm very thankful for all of you.
