As students, beneficiaries and lovers of nature, my students at Campfire Academy and I believe that we have a duty to play an active role in conserving the places and systems that play such an important role in our education, our livelihood and our travel experiences. Later this year we embark on the Camp2Kili Overland  Explorer, a safari guide training and travel experience, which includes a 6-day trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro. We want to use this opportunity to leverage the visibility and awesome magnitude of one of Africa's greatest natural landmarks to raise conservation awareness of another: the magnificent Okavango Delta Wetland System.

The work of Dr Rutledge ‘Steve’ Boyes and the Wild Bird Trust (WBT) caught our attention in the documentary piece INTO THE OKAVANGO and it was decided that the Trust and their Okavango projects should be the focus of our initiative. We contacted the Trust with a fundraising concept proposal and our group was approved to act as ambassadors and fundraisers for the Trust.

PLEASE NOTE: We are NOT raising money to fund our trip/trek. We are raising funds for the Trust itself, and using the trip to increase visibility for the work of the Trust. We will print and carry a summit banner up Mt Kili to literally shout the mission of the Trust from the highest mountain tops. Your donation buys you bragging rights as a supporter of this quest and your name will be listed on the Trust website as a contributor. The money raised will be turned over directly to the Trust by Campfire Academy.

The conservation objectives of our trek will be:

1. To raise funds for the WBT.
2. To raise awareness of the WBT and its activities.
3. To raise awareness of the need for and significance of conserving Africa’s great natural landmarks and ecosystems.

MORE INFO: The Trust was founded in 2009 by Dr Boyes and is a registered Public Benefit Organisation. The Trust works with governments, education and research institutions, the private sector and civic society to advance ornithological and ecological research, conservation and education.

The Bird Nerds Quiz was a warbling success! We raised just over 250 euros with the support of local birders and conservation groups who attended the evening. This money will be deposited into this Gofundme account for traction. We still have quite some way to go so please continue sharing, chirping and twitching about this cause!

Pictured in order above are the winning Bird Nerds:)
