Pay Off Tumwater Schools Lunch Debt

Donation protected
Did you know that school lunch debt carries over from one year to the next? If you're a parent that's ever experienced a lunch debt for your child, you know that it can be stressful to get notes and phone calls repeatedly until the debt is collected. And the collection process starts as soon as the debt is incurred - even for a minor debt such as a quarter. Maybe you've been on the receiving end of the automated call. It can be stressful - I know firsthand after failing to replenish my daughter's milk fund a couple of times this year.

But the impact to a student can be greater. On top of the stress of other kids knowing that he/she is in debt, that lunch debt can be the difference between a small sandwich or a full hot lunch, and I think all our kids deserve the latter.

Tumwater School officials tell me that the total outstanding debt is just under $3600. But they also informed me that they don't write it off after each year. Can you imagine being a student and starting the school year off not being able to eat a full hot lunch? With all the recent news about "lunch shaming" and the success of one dad's campaign to pay off the lunch debt for Seattle schools, I thought we should make the same effort to pay off lunch debt here in Tumwater.

I've set the goal at $4000 because there's still a few weeks left in the school year and I want to make sure we completely clear the debt before the next school year. This isn't a particularly newsworthy amount, but it would make a major impact for affected kids.

Can you help?
