My Story

Hello everyone, my name is Kennedy Kiboro.
A Kenyan native, I've lived most of my life in southern California. At ten years old, I was diagnosed as HIV positive. I've been lucky enough to be surrounded by the necessary support system and resources following my diagnosis.

Living in the United States, I've been alloted the privelages of a free, quality education and the best healthcare available. I gradutated high school 2009, and I am now in a career  I love. My HIV viral load is currently virtually undetecatble, and my diagnosis does not severly impact my day-to-day life. I credit all the support and resources available to me.

Had I never left Kenya, had I been diagnosed in Kenya, my story may be drastically different. Quality of life should not be determined by luck. The determining factor for access to modern healthcare should not rely on one's location.

The Facts
The reality for many children directly affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya is heartbreaking. Many are left as orpans to fend for themselves, and the ones infected have little to no access to proper healthcare. The leading cause of mortality among Kenyans is HIV/AIDS, which kills around 80,000 people per year. The disease has left an estimated of 2 million children without one or both parents.

I believe every single child deserves a fighting chance to quality education and healthcare, and this should not be determined by geography.

The Cause
Tumaini operates  a walk-in medical clinic that provides treatment for sponsored children, especially those who are HIV-positive or battling AIDS. The medical clinic also serves the surrounding communities with initial screening and treatment of illness and injuries and includes an onsite pharmacy and lab. Their goal is to expand the facility to a full service hospital in the near future.

Currently, Tumaini is in the process of raising money to convert one of the clinics to a full functioning hospital.
