Chi?
Venti ex ragazzi di strada di Kawempe, supportati dall’associazione ugandese KYDA (Kawempe Youth Development Association) e TUgende, quattro giovani architetti che hanno scelto di sostenere l’associazione mettendo a disposizione le proprie competenze.
Dal 2014 TUgende contribuisce a supportare le attività dell’organizzazione attraverso la progettazione di micro interventi architettonici, utilizzando un approccio partecipativo e sostenibile nel rispetto della cultura e dell’ambiente locale.

Perché?
Uno spazio cucina risulterebbe migliorativo sia da un punto di vista igienico che economico: ad oggi i ragazzi cucinano a terra con
un elevato rischio di contaminazione degli alimenti utilizzando un fornelletto ad alto consumo di carbone che pesa sulle casse dell’associazione.
La costruzione di una rocket stove, una stufa per cucinare, a sostituzione del fornelletto permetterebbe di ridurre di due terzi
l’attuale consumo di carbone.

Come?
TUgende ha tenuto un workshop di due giorni con i ragazzi per capire le esigenze che la nuova struttura della cucina avrebbe dovuto soddisfare. Il progetto nasce dai bisogni dei ragazzi, dal contesto e dalla disponibilità dei materiali in loco.

La nuova struttura ospiterà:

- una stanza in cui verrà posizionata la rocket stove, una stufa che consuma poco carbone grazie al massimo sfruttamento
dell’inerzia termica dei materiali di cui è costituita e a un sistema di aerazione della camera di combustione che diffonde il calore
equamente sulle superfici riscaldanti, permettendo di avere più pentole contemporaneamente sul fuoco

-  un luogo dove i ragazzi possano mangiare tutti insieme all'aperto ma protetti dal sole e dalla pioggia

-  una stanza adibita a dispensa

- una cisterna per la raccolta dell’acqua che andrà a servire le attività della cucina

- un luogo adibito al lavaggio delle stoviglie. 











La costruzione si compone di due elementi architettonici: un podio e una grande copertura in lamiera sorretta da una struttura me
tallica. Appoggiate sul podio e al riparo sotto la copertura ci sono le stanze della cucina, del magazzino e lo spazio della cisterna.
Il podio rialza le stanze da terra, garantendo il livellamento del terreno e impedendo che le forti precipitazioni possano
raggiungere gli ambienti interni durante la stagione delle piogge. La copertura funge da superficie per la raccolta dell’acqua
piovana, utile sia per cucinare che per l’irrigazione dell’orto e, inoltre, protegge le stanze dalla pioggia e dal caldo garantendo
un’adeguata climatizzazione dei locali grazie ad un’altezza considerevole tra la muratura ed il piano d’imposta della copertura.
Le stanze sono delimitate da muri fatti di mattoni cotti in forni locali e poi intonacati. L’uso di mattonelle forate a creare gelosie e la foratura della muratura stessa garantiscono luce e una corretta ventilazione all'interno dei locali.

A SUSTAINABLE KITCHEN FOR STREET KIDS OF KAWEMPE

Who?
Twenty ex street kids of Kawempe, supported by the Ugandan association KYDA (Kawempe Youth Development Association) and TUgende, four young architects who have chosen to support the association by making available their skills.
From 2014 TUgende contributes to supporting the organization’s activities through the design of micro-architectural
interventions, using a participatory and sustainable approach respecting the local culture and environment.

Why?
A kitchen space will improve both from a hygienic and economic point of view: at the moment kids are cooking on the ground  with a high risk of food contamination and with a high-consumption of coal stove that weighs on the expenses of the association.
The construction of a rocket stove, a stove for cooking, a substitution of the stove refuses to reduce by two thirds the current
consumption of coal.

Such as?
TUgende held a two-day workshop with the children to understand the needs of the new kitchen structure. The project stems
from the needs of children, the context and the availability of materials on site.


Project details:
The new structure will host:

• a room in which the rocket stove will be placed, a stove that consumes little coal thanks to the maximum exploitation of the thermal inertia of the materials it is made of and a ventilation system of the combustion chamber that diffuses the heat equally on the heating surfaces, allowing have more pots at the same time on the fire;
• a place where children can eat together outdoors but protected from the sun and rain;
• a room used as a pantry;
• a cistern for collecting water that will serve the kitchen;
• a place used for washing dishes;

The project consists of two architectural elements: a podium and a large sheet metal roof supported by a metal structure; resting
on the podium and sheltered under the roof are the kitchen spaces, the warehouse and the space of the cistern.
The podium raises the rooms from the ground, ensuring the leveling of the ground and preventing the heavy rains from reaching the inner spaces during the rainy season. The roof acts as a floor for the collection of rainwater, useful for cooking, irrigation of the garden and protection of rooms from rain and heat and ensures at the same time adequate air conditioning of the premises thanks to a considerable height between the masonry and the coverage.
The rooms are bounded by walls made of bricks cooked in ovens in the area and then plastered. The use of perforated tiles and the drilling of the masonry ensures light and proper ventilation inside the premises.
