Tristan’s Study Abroad: China

$1,545 of $1,400 goal

Raised by 19 people in 4 months
Tristan is a high school freshman studying Mandarin at BHS and is committed to 4 years of it in the International Baccalaureate program. It’s difficult, and he loves it.

Tristan applied earlier this fall for a long-shot scholarship to study aboard in China this summer. It was one of those things we knew wouldn’t happen but we wanted him to try for anyway, and we figured he’d keep trying for over his high school career. When we hit send on the application, he wondered, “What if they say yes?” But we were pretty sure it wouldn’t happen. None of us were expecting a scholarship high enough to make it affordable for us.

We were notified yesterday that Tristan received a 100% Global Navigator Scholarship based on academic merit. (Kid’s got good grades!) All he has to do is buy a plane ticket. He will spend a month in China this summer, learning Mandarin. He is completely elated/ overwhelmed/ shocked/ excited. We are overjoyed.

We wanted to share the happy news and also ask for help. He has time to raise the funds for his ticket and passport, but his school and rowing schedule will keep him from taking a job. He will need your help. Expect to hear more from him as he works to make this a reality. His hard work has him most of the way there already!

It has been awhile since I’ve updated here. Lots going on: we bought the ticket and are working on the visa. It seems like weeks are flying by. June will be here before we know it.

I’m am starting to think about and plan a local group garage sale/ bake sale collaboration as a final push for funds to cover Tristan’s trip. Tristan’s siblings hope to make signs and share this event widely.

Tristan is in the final stretch of his freshman year. It’s racing season and we’ve been to several regattas to watch him row. Mandarin is going very well. He is excited and confident about studying abroad.

Please continue to share this campaign so we can reach our goal. I’ll do my best to keep updating as we get closer! Thank you

We are almost there! Tristan is astounded by the generous donations- we all are. He’s into his second semester of high school, busy with racing season, and also taking small steps towards China. Here’s one:

Today Tristan took an important step: he opened his first bank account. A family friend donated the necessary ‘spending money’, and luckily he will be able to access it in China via an ATM.

It’s time to buy the plane ticket. We hope to continue fundraising to cover the remainder of that cost and his visa costs. Please continue to share this campaign!
Don’t spend it all in one place!
