TRINITY COLLEGE DUBLIN MED DAY 2017 - FRIDAY 3RD NOVEMBER
What is Med Day?
'Med Day' is a student-led fundraising event endorsed by the School of Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Since 2002, the medical school has designated one day a year when students raise money for charity instead of attending lectures. On the 3rd November over 600 medical students meet up on campus early in the morning, have a quick breakfast and don 'Med Day' T-shirts. They then spread out to various locations around the city with collection buckets, greeting pedestrians and asking for donations. This collection drive is also supplemented by other fundraisers such as sponsored marathons, busking, bake sales, quizzes and more. All money raised from the day is used to fund worthy causes in Trinity-affiliated hospitals. Over the past 13 years, we have raised over €500,000 for new health services and medical equipment which benefit patients.
Our Beneficiaries for 2017:
Over the past five months our committee has been working tirelessly to identify hospital services that are most in need of support. As part of our selection process we spoke with staff at numerous sites and received over 25 applications for funding. After weeks of intensive deliberation, the following are the worthy causes that we have decided to fund:
Breast Cancer Research Saint James’ hospital
Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. One in five cases of breast cancer are thought to arise in a hereditary fashion with certain women being of significantly increased risk of acquiring cancer throughout their lifetime. We hope to help by supporting the development of the ‘Breast Cancer Biobank’ at St James’s Hospital, a large database of tumour specimens which can be used by international researchers to study lung cancer as well as the establishment of a registry of those who are at an increased risk of breast cancer across the country.
Surgical Equipment to improve outcomes in Gynaecological cancers
Uterine cancer make up a very significant portion of cancers affecting women in Ireland. Often these cancers can spread to nearby regions called lymph nodes. The removal of all of the lymph nodes in the pelvis can lead to serious complications such as swelling of the legs (lymphoedema) and recurrent infections (lymphangitis). With new fluorescent probe technology we hope to prevent these serious complications which can destroy a woman's quality of life even post cancer treatment.
Ultrasound Equipment at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin
This project will allow for the purchase of an advanced ultrasound probe which aims to provide the best possible care to some of the sickest children in the country. It will allow for the earlier detection of serious congenital abnormalities in the blood vessels of young patients leading to prompt and more accurate treatments.
High-Dependency Bed for patients post cardiothoracic surgery at Saint James’ Hospital
The Keith Shaw ward in Saint James’ Hospital provides care for patients following serious lung surgery. These patients require very careful and exact postoperative management to ensure the best possible outcomes. The ward traditionally had four dedicated high dependency beds which in itself was barely sufficient. Two of these beds were recently deemed unsuitable for continued use. We hope to fund the purchase of one of these high-dependency beds to allow for the continued postoperative care of patients in the Keith Shaw ward.

As an organisation run by medical students, ‘Med Day’ also supports the equal opportunity of education for all. The Trinity Access Programme (TAP) encourages young adults, adults and ethnic minority students who come from socio-economic groups underrepresented in higher education, to go to university.
