Trilogy:  An Opera Company’s Big, Bold, Brilliant 2017 Season -- DAS RHEINGOLD, NAT TURNER, TREEMONISHA, W.E.B./BOOKER T. and KENYATTA

In a bold move towards advancing the ideals of diversity and inclusion, Trilogy:  An Opera Company (TAOC) will launch its 2017 season with a semi-staged performance of Richard Wagner’s “Das Rheingold” or “The Rhinegold” (English).   Trilogy’s historical production of “Das Rheingold” will feature Donnie Ray Albert (baritone) as Wotan

The first of four in the German composer’s famed Ring cycle, “Das Rheingold” is a powerful fantasy of Gods, giants, heroes, heroines, a troll and the story of a cursed magical ring. Trilogy’s future plans includes the annual production of each of the four operas in Wagner’s Ring cycle entitled “Der Ring des Nibelungen” or “The Ring of Nibelung” (English).  Through this project, artistic director Kevin Maynor sees Trilogy as creating greater opportunity for diversity in experience and development for both artists and audiences alike.  To better engage and prepare its audience, Trilogy will use social and other media to discuss the significance of the work, its influence on popular art such as “The Lord of The Rings”, the beauty of the music, the commonality of the themes, and correlations with everyday life in our communities.  Trilogy’s historical production of “Das Rheingold” will feature Donnie Ray Albert (baritone) as Wotan, Kevin Maynor (bass) as Fasolt, Rodrick Dixon (tenor) as Loge, Geraldine McMillian (soprano) as Fricka and Benjamin Bloomfield (bass baritone) as Alberich.  The performance will take place on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. in Victoria Theater at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), 1 Center St., Newark, NJ.

Trilogy’s production of “Das Rheingold” will be the first time the opera will be performed in the state of NJ as part of a Ring -- and by a Black opera company – featuring Black singers!

Trilogy’s production of “Das Rheingold” will provide the platform for professional opera singers of African descent to be a part of this historic piece.  Please show your STRONG support for this groundbreaking endeavor.  Purchase your tickets TODAY at the NJPAC box office (BEST) or online via www.njpac.org  or call 1.888.GO.NJPAC.  Save fees by purchasing tickets at box office ($44 and $54).

Das Rheingold is being performed in the original language, German.  As a thank you to you, our faithful audience, we are providing a translation of the libretto prior to the performance so you can have an idea of the story before the Opera begins.  Please note:  This libretto is a reduced version......the version WE will present.  To access the libretto, please click here: Das Rheingold Libretto

Trilogy continues its traditional free summer festival performances with “Treemonisha” by Scott Joplin in July 2017.  Through this production, Trilogy takes a look inside the theme of slaves left to "fend" for themselves. The close of the civil war and the abandoning of plantations left but owned by whites, found slaves who were not allowed to own anything or one, in the strange predicament of governing themselves when all the money "ran for the hills".  Left with the mess, the inheriting population was now faced with problem solving of the highest order. This beautiful piece requiring an imposing ballet and stellar children's choir is a sure winner for those who have been trained in the highest musical traditions.

Following up will be the August 5, 2017 performance of “Nat Turner” by the late Michael Raphael.  “Nat Turner” was Trilogy’s first operatic production in 2004.   Through this production, Trilogy reveals correlations between the rebellion in Virginia and the "rebellion" in Newark, NJ , the home of Trilogy.  This uprising of both groups of people was in fact a result of frustration by Black Americans. TAOC looks at this exceptional work with its beautiful musical numbers and arias that address specific concerns, in a more expanded way using discussion of the uprising itself . We invite scholars and activists alike to investigate this. The use of the most complete art form to show the high emotional content, will prove to be a study in itself.

In October, Trilogy will present “W.E.B. Du Bois/Booker T., a new opera by Maestro Julius Williams, Trilogy’s resident conductor.  The piece will focus on the similarities of these two brilliant men who, because of the color of their skin, were pitted against each other in hopes of destroying the threat of revolutionary change that their collaboration could yield.

Finally, on November 19, 2017, Trilogy will present the world premiere of “Kenyatta”, a new opera by Trent Johnson, acclaimed organist, composer, pianist and conductor, with libretto by award winning author and playwright Richard Wesley.  The opera is based on the life of Kenya’s founding father and first president, African statesman and nationalist, Jomo Kenyatta.

Trilogy is one of the few companies in America that focuses its artistic efforts on heroes, heroines and historical events from the experience of Black Americans.  Through the music of Black composers, Trilogy tells the compelling and important stories of the Black community that permeate the fabric of American culture.

Trilogy: An Opera Company provides opera and art related to this genre that is reflective of the world in which we live.   Trilogy productions include:  "Nat Turner"; "Frederick Douglas"; "Harriet:  A Woman Called Moses"; "Call, Shout and Holler"; "Emmett Till:  The Oratorio"; "Emmett Till:  The opera"; "Dafur, Darfur"; "Treemonisha"; three one act operas:  "The Ballad of James Byrd", "4", and "The Three Mayors"; "The Mask in the Mirror" (Paul Laurence Dunbar); “Papa Doc”; “TAOC Chor Ensemble”; “Newark City Ballet”; “An Evening with Tuffus Zimbabwe”; “Ode to Trayvon”; “Robeson:  The Opera”, “Bird That Wants To Fly”, “Homage to a King”; “Garvey”; “Joe Louis”, “Five”, “Das Rheingold” March 19, 2017 (NJPAC), “W.E.B.
