Trevor's Hope: Diabetic Alert Dog

Donation protected
Everyone says it won't happen to their child…

Three months ago my small family's simple life was forever changed. Our 12-year-old son Trevor was diagnosed with type one diabetes.

Sitting across from Trevor in the exam room I could've never imagined nor could he what the doctor was about to say. How do you explain to a seemingly perfectly healthy, active 12-year-old boy that yesterday he was fine, but today he has a lifelong illness? An illness that includes 4 to 10 finger pricks per day and 4 to 8 shots per day lifelong… Every day… To keep you alive.

A little about Trevor:
Trevor is a 13-year-old Smart, funny, athletic, fun loving little boy. Trevor is an honor roll student who is full of energy and spends most of his time after school outdoors playing sports or fishing.
To the naked eye Trevor seemed perfectly healthy. With an already thin build, his weight loss went unnoticed. Because he sat in the back of the class, his vision complaints were brushedoff. Because of his high energy and activity level, his increased hunger and excessive thirst were mistaken for normal. It wasn't until he frequently complained of having to go to the bathroom that he was taken to the doctor for what at most we thought would be a mild kidney infection.

That day, in that single moment three words from the mouth of a doctor changed his life forever, "You have diabetes."

I explain this to you as an example of how suddenly and drastically the life of an average 12-year-old boy on the day he was told he made the school baseball team also was told his life would never be the same. Through the struggles of sticking his own finger, giving himself his own shots, there were a multitude of drastic  changes Trevor has adjusted to.

There are only two things Trevor has asked for. One is for a cure for himself and others like him. Though I will advocate and support for a cure until the day I die sadly today I cannot give him that. Two, a diabetic alert dog that is his only other request. Trevor suffers with symptoms of hypoglycemic unawareness, meaning his body doesn't show him a lot of the symptoms of low blood sugar before his numbers are dangerously low. He also struggles with recognizing the symptoms of his blood sugar being too high.

Our goal for Trevor is to raise $15,000 to purchase him a fully trained and licensed diabetic alert service dog. Diabetic alert dogs use cues to alert their owner when they sense the owners blood sugar is high or low, often before the body even produces the symptoms. This dog could not only save Trevor's life but will also give him a sense of companionship and control in a situation that is truly out of his control.

We hope that you will find it worthy to donate to Trevor's cause, and if not to our cause specifically please donate to the juvenile diabetes research for a cure foundation.

Thank you for taking the time to read Trevor's story and please feel free to share his story with others.
