Treadway's Super STEM SmartLab

• Our nation's prosperity is tied to innovation. All young people should be prepared to think deeply so that they have the chance to become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can solve the most pressing challenges facing our nation and our world.

Treadway Elementary wants students to have the opportunity to succeed in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) by starting them off early and better preparing them for the future.

Treadway would like to re-purpose part of our current Learning Commons (Media Center) into an engaging STEM environment. It will be equipped with computers, furnishings, manipulatives, printing equipment, and science/engineering kits; it's called a SmartLab.

The SmartLab will provide hands-on, minds-on, project-based learning activities for all the students in our school.   A SmartLab provides purposeful exploration in the areas of scientific analysis, circuitry, robotics, engineering, mechanics, and structures. The lab helps students recognize that they hold the answers, that they can utilize problem-solving strategies, and that they can and will be the expert.  Lab experiences will extend beyond the school day/year as we provide after-school STEM sessions for Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Treadway’s students will show academic growth in STEM related studies, will have less school absences, and will be college and career ready! The Treadway Super-STEM SmartLab will be a catalyst for personalized learning and STEM initiatives throughout Lake County Schools.

Treadway is a large elementary school with an enrollment of over 940 students. Traditionally, our students have scored well on state assessments and we were an "A" school for several years in a row. For two consecutive years, Treadway had a decline in student achievement. The 2014-2015 5th grade FCAT Science scores dropped 11 percentage points, and during the same year the 5th grade Math FSA scores fell below the State and the District average. Treadway was no longer an “A” school. Second semester attendance during the 2014-2015 year dropped 3%. In addition to the need for academic growth, our students need to develop and use 21st Century Skills to help prepare them to be college and career ready.

Although, we have implemented STEM activities in all grade levels, we lack the technology and materials needed to assist our students in reaching higher achievement levels. The SmartLab software, curriculum and experiences will benefit all Treadway students especially our students of lower socio-economic status who would not otherwise have access outside of the school. These students also need adult role models to inspire them to pursue 21st Century careers.

The implementation of a STEM SmartLab would address academic needs by evolving our existing STEM program into a broader, deeper, more sustainable 21st century learning environment that is equipped with much needed technology, tools, manipulatives and resources that the students currently don’t have to compete with some of the other schools in the district or the state.

The SmartLab program supports opportunities for local retirees and/or professionals to participate in learning experiences by assisting, demonstrating, and mentoring on projects where appropriate. Treadway's SmartLab will be the "place to be!" for students in our community. Students will not want to miss out on these highly engaging learning opportunities.
