Help fund an artist for a festival!

Good day!

I'm Juro Kim Feliz, a contemporary music composer based in Toronto. You can check out more about me in my website, and my portfolio of works is also archived online in my Soundcloud page. I just finished my Masters degree in music at McGill University in Montreal and have recently moved here to Toronto. I've been actively composing and having my music performed in different places around the world, with recent premieres of a solo alto flute work rendered by Marilène Provencher-Leduc in Montreal, and a miniature piano concerto rendered by Filip Fak and the Festival Ensemble of the 29th Music Biennale Zagreb in Croatia. The majority of my music addresses multi-layered reflections on "distance," which can range from ruminations on global migration and displacement to notions of otherness and non-belonging, of tensions between individual identity versus shared identity, and even also of humanity versus a spiritual, divine and pure Other (God). Being a Filipino/Southeast Asian composer (soon to be Canadian in case things work out within the next coming years) in North America, I find this path very special for me as it comes with the benefit of bearing some representation of a visible minority community among the global new music scene, bridging more diverse spaces together along the way.

I was recently selected as one of the programmed composers for the New Music on the Bayou, a music festival and conference happening on 31 May to 3 June 2017 in Monroe, Louisiana. My work "Gandingan sa Kagiliran" (Gongs in the Horizon, for percussion duo) will be part of the program, and the festival conditions state that the composer must be present during the festival in order to be performed. I have applied for this festival since last year, and difficulty in travel arrangements to Monroe prevented me from traveling there (and so I lost my chance of being part of it). This year would be the second time that I got selected, and I find it a blessing that the festival is really willing to program my work.

The challenging part is to actually make this happen on my end. Recently moving to a new city and starting a new life, it is indeed a steep climb uphill for me even when one tries to catch up with intense freelance work. As I'm still not considered a landed immigrant in this country, I'm not eligible for any federal or provincial travel grant or source of funding that's otherwise way easily accessible for Canadians and permanent residents. It's in this context that I need financial assistance to raise up enough money before the 21st of May 2017 to book a roundtrip ticket and affordable accommodations for the 4-day festival. I will gladly accept any amount as long as it comes from your own generous heart, and I will be very grateful with just that. Think of it as supporting an artist who's committed not only to create meaningful art but also to contribute in making the world a more colourful and sensible place to be.

Thanks for reading my story and I sincerely hope that you could help out! In case you're not in any capacity to contribute financially, you can share my story to other people who you think would gladly do so. God bless you.

Regards,

Juro Kim Feliz
