Trans People Do Yoga, my TT journey

Donation protected
A super queer yogic fundraiser

After 12+ years of practicing yoga I am ready to expand my practice from student to teacher. I will be a student in the Past Tense Living Yoga Teacher Training this fall with my teacher Alicia Moyer.

I am a unique member of the D.C. yoga community. Though I have been lucky to learn from yogis of color at different times in my 12 year practice, it is extremely rare to see transgender Latinx folks like me in a yoga studio. It is time to make a change. The yoga community is overwhelmingly white, wealthy, cisgendered, and thin. As a yoga teacher I hope to influence a dynamic shift in the yoga classroom. The yoga classroom should and must be a site of resistance. I love yoga. What I love most about the physical, selfless, imperfect, and meditative practice of yoga is the gift of being in my queer brown body, safely and expansively for hours at a time. Yoga is not a affordable physical activity for those of us whose bodies make it extremely difficult to live in this world. In a world that tries to erase us, and deny us access to basic needs, a yoga practice is and can be for every-body, all races, and genders.

My experience as Alicia’s student has convinced me to extend my path to become a yoga teacher. Her vast knowledge of the yogic tradition, creativity in the classroom, and her zest for dynamic movement, strength, and alignment is awe-inspiring. I can’t wait to further my work as her student.

The total tuition for this training is $2800. I have received a generous donation from a Past Tense community donor for $1150. But, with your help, I will raise the remaining $1650 (plus tax) over the next two weeks. Thank you in advance for your donation to my fundraiser.

Celebrate and support trans women

June is also LGBTQ pride month. I would like to extend this moment of national celebration to fundraise for one of my favorite service organizations in Washington, D.C., and my doctoral research site, Casa Ruby. I will donate any amount that we raise over $1650 (plus tax) directly to the organization! Casa Ruby is a unique bilingual social service non-profit in Washington, D.C. The organization provides such services as shelter, food, and case management. Casa Ruby turns six this month! The organization is a vital safe haven for transgender women of color, the most vulnerable members of the D.C. LGBT community. Casa Ruby has given me so much over the past five years and with your help, we can give back to this group of resilient women and their client-community!
