Transportation Costs during Cancer Treatment

TAMMY:  If you’ve lived in the Temecula Valley for very long, you likely know Jane and Jon Laskin.  Both have had a 25 year non profit career serving thousands of individuals by providing enrichment programs in the arts. Their programs were so impactful that two of their students have gone on to win three Grammys between the two!

Two years ago their world was shaken when Jane was diagnosed with cancer. Now, after years and years of helping others, they need some help themselves. Cancer is a debilitating and depleting disease. The Laskin’s have been forced to sell their family home and move to Canada to stay with family and to take advantage of the Canadian healthcare system. Jon and Jane started a small business to sustain themselves but now Jane cannot work! It’s a very challenging situation! Jon is trying hard to provide them with an income and also care for his loving wife!  Her latest hope is a new treatment that requires her to travel regularly to Vancouver. The transportation costs are exorbitant. It requires three ferries to Vancouver resulting in 6 to 8 hours of transportation time on the off season and longer during tourist season! A more doable alternative is for her to take a float plane at $320 per visit! This is quicker and less stressful for her. Please consider helping them offset some of these costs to make life a tad easier! Here’s Jane’s story, as told by her!

JANE:  “Two years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer...since then, I have had many organs removed...part of my colon, my appendix, both ovaries and fallopian tubes. My cancer has now spread into my abdominal wall, with many tumors, both large and small. I am about to enter another, my third round of chemo, this time the treatment is designed to target the tumors specifically and hopefully put the cancer into remission! I will probably not be able to work, and I have to go to Vancouver every two weeks for treatment. Each trip to Vancouver requires 3 ferries each way then a bus and then a taxi ride. This type of transportation takes 5 to 9 hours each way and is more than I can bear! Vancouver is a considerable distance from our home on Hornby Island and the truth is, I don’t feel well. This half day ordeal just to get to the doctor is quite frankly exhausting. I prefer to travel on a float plane but that’s very expensive! I’m doing everything I can to improve my health! I live on an alkaline diet, and do green smoothies and vegetable juicing. Im also using some alternative supplements and all these things are expensive and I am reaching out for financial help! Never dreamed this would happen to me, in a million years.”

JON:  Here’s some clarification from Jon: “In the summer there's a 5 to 6 hour wait for the ferry! My wife is ill, this wait is unacceptable and not in her best interest! She has to do this for three ferries each treatment back and forth to Vancouver. These treatments are required every two weeks! A more manageable idea is to fly her to Vancouver through the summer until September. After September, tourism slows and the ferry option might work. The flight is $160 each way. Actually a good deal compared to her other options!

Its hard for us to ask for your help but we don’t have options! Please consider a little help in support of my wife!”

TAMMY: Life takes so many unexpected twists and turns, consider supporting our local friends. No donation is too small and each one is so greatly appreciated! The funds will be used for transportation and other costs associated with Janes illness! Thanks in advance for the love!!
