Translate LEGAL STUFF Booklet

Tax deductible
It is important for people of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds to have a basic understanding of the law.  As Hennepin County becomes increasingly diverse, it is important that language does not act as a barrier for understanding rights.  For this reason, the Hennepin County Bar Foundation is seeking funds to translate LEGAL STUFF into Spanish.

For over 20 years, the Hennepin County Bar Association has produced LEGAL STUFF, a 50-page booklet designed to answer general questions about the law, legal rights, and responsibilities. LEGAL STUFF has been used as a teaching tool in high schools and as a personal guide to individuals who are navigating various legal situations. Over 100,000 copies have been provided free of charge to teachers and schools, community groups, new citizens, and others throughout Minnesota.

The booklet covers a wide variety of areas, including: civic rights and responsibilities (voting, military service, jury duty, taxes), student rights—in school and out, and answers to legal questions relating to employment, immigration, housing, marriage and family law, healthcare, driving, criminal law, the court system, and a host of other areas.

By gaining a general understanding of the law and knowledge of their rights, individuals are more equipped to make informed decisions and avoid common mistakes. As Hennepin County becomes increasingly diverse, it is important that language does not act as a barrier to equal access to justice and understanding one’s rights.

For this reason, the Hennepin County Bar Foundation is seeking funds to translate LEGAL STUFF into Spanish and to provide the booklet to more individuals throughout the community. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in Hennepin County, and recent census data shows that over 60,000 residents speak Spanish at home.  Translating LEGAL STUFF into Spanish for this audience reduces a significant barrier to understanding the law.

Please help support our work to translate LEGAL STUFF and help increase the use of this valued educational and community legal resource.   $4,000 is needed to complete this work.

Your contribution in any amount is greatly appreciated! Donors over $100 will be recognized in the translated booklet.

If the HCBF does not achieve its financial goal through this campaign it will seek resources from other sources to complete this project.
