Transkei Outreach

Donation protected
In June, we (Debbie, Julia and Melissa) are participating in a volunteer opportunity in the Transkei, South Africa.  We will be joining a group of high school students from Cape Town who have travelled 770 miles every June since 2012 to the Isolomzi School in the rural area of the Transkei to tutor under-resourced high school students in math, accounting, economics, life sciences and physics.  Many of the students at Isolomzi walk 13 km to school on an empty stomach. Their lack of school books, school buildings and teachers make it almost impossible for them to succeed. The incredibly enthusiastic Headmaster of Isolomzi School has managed to instill the belief in his pupils that their way out of their poverty is a matric certificate (graduation from high school). With the help of the volunteer group from Cape Town, the Isolomzi School has increased their graduation pass rate from 52% in 2012 to 100% at the end of 2017!

Due to the success of the program at Isolomzi, this year the project is expanding to a much bigger, neighboring school, Tyali Secondary School. In addition, the project is undertaking the funding and establishment of a Community Center for the aged and very young children.

We have committed to raise enough money to cover lunches and teaching materials for the Tyali Secondary School students for the duration of the trip.  Any additional money raised will go towards the new community center.

Thanks to our local friends and family who have already supported the Transkei Outreach through our raffle. If you have not had an opportunity to contribute, please join us in supporting this wonderful cause.  Even $10 can make a difference.
