At a celebratory happy hour, Marv and Anaya started talking about their future goals. When both of us had the same dream to start a nonprofit that could fund hormones and surgeries for trans* folks who are uninsured or underinsured, we decided it was probably time to just go ahead and do it. Thus was born (with the creative words of a good friend), The Transformative Freedom Fund.
We've been working at this for about 6 weeks now.
We have a mission: Supporting the authentic selves of transgender Coloradans by removing financial barriers to transition related healthcare.
We're starting with a focus in Colorado, with the intention of expanding in the future. We can't expand if we never start, though.
We've written our Articles of Incorporation and our bylaws, and we're getting ready to file for 501(c)3 status and with the State of Colorado to make us legit.
That's where you all come in. Filing costs dollars, and we want to make sure that we're creating something that isn't just ours. We want buy in from our community, from our allies, from our families. We want to create something lasting, and we can't do that on our own. So we're reaching out to ask you all to help us fund the startup costs.
Filing with the IRS for status is $850
Filing with Colorado is $50
GoFundMe has to do their thing, so they take a bit of a cut (in a really reasonable way, 7.9% of each donation total)
We're shooting for a launch event on September 9th of 2017. You should all come. It's going to be epic. So we need to get this legal stuff done as quickly as we can so we can start the REAL work. We're super stoked about this dream, and we want to make it a reality for our community.
