Tracy's Battle

Donation protected
Tracy Kearcher is, by far, one of the best people I know. She and her husband Tim, moved to Ellington in the summer of 2015 with their two children, Alyssa and Matthew. Tracy immediately became involved in the Ellington community through her church, MOMs Club, Center School PTO, and as a Girl Scout leader. As the mother of two school-aged children, juggling a career as the owner of Glitsy Girls Mobile Salon, along with various volunteer positions in ALL of the above organizations, she quickly made friends and rooted herself in the Ellington community.

Shortly after the move, Tracy’s son Matthew was diagnosed with mild autism. Along with this diagnosis, comes a long list of therapies and challenges. However, unlike many of us, she rarely complained. She was always positive and cheerful and looking on the bright side. She had recently started taking classes to learn more about Matthew’s diagnosis and how to help him. Tracy thought that autism was going to be her biggest challenge in life. Unfortunately, life had a bigger battle in store just around the corner.

Throughout the month of March, Tracy had been experiencing some issues with an infected wisdom tooth that wouldn’t heal. One Saturday afternoon, when she couldn’t bear the pain any longer, she went to the emergency room at Hartford Hospital. The medical staff ran some tests, and immediately admitted Tracy to the hospital. Within a matter of days, Tracy’s life was turned upside down. On Monday morning, the doctor informed Tracy that she has acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive form of leukemia. Tracy quickly started intense chemotherapy treatments. However, the first round of chemotherapy did not have the success that was hoped for. Tracy soon learned that she has a rare genetic mutation called inversion chromosome 3, which is associated with a very poor response to treatment. Tracy is currently undergoing her second round of chemotherapy at Dana Farber Institute in Boston. Following that, she hopes to have a bone marrow transplant. During this entire ordeal, months in the hospital, being separated from her children, Tracy has shown us all the true meaning of strength and grace. As a community organizer and volunteer, Tracy has always focused her attention on helping others. Now, she needs OUR help.

Our hearts reach out to this young family, and we want to help them with the financial strain that is quickly becoming a burden. While the Kearcher family battles AML, the cost of “normal” life goes on. Bills are the absolute last thing that should be on someone’s mind while they fight for their life and undergo cancer treatment. A group of friends from Center School, Girl Scouts and Ellington MOMs Club have teamed up to help! We are hoping to help relieve expenses related to lodging, transportation, childcare, and healthcare/insurance copays and bills. We pray that, for Tracy, what began as a life-changing setback, will become a story of courage, thoughtful resolve, and ultimately, a return to good health. Let’s help Tracy win her battle with leukemia!
