For most of my adult life I have been financially dependent on a relationship that did not stand the test of time, and I ended up being single with no true working experience except retail cosmetics. So I chose to branch off on my own to explore makeup and photography as my career.
The problem is that in NC it is against state board laws to practice makeup artistry without a esthetics or cosmetology license. So now I’m in the process of researching local community colleges and beauty institutes to get an esthetics license.
Having an esthetics license will open many more doors than retail cosmetics has; as I will be able to perform skin treatments, waxing, microdermabrasion, etc. I plan to work hard and pass the state board exams then work in a local salon or spa while building my own artistry and photography brand.
My goal is to enroll this fall and go to school full time to finish in one semester while actively applying for jobs. The average cost is $2000 for NC community colleges, and I would also like to be prepared with the additional $500 to purchase kit supplies and uniform.
