At two months old my niece, Tonirae, was rushed to Texas Children's Hospital while in the care of her Biological Father. She was having seizures and as soon as she got to the hospital, she went into surgery due to swelling and fluid building in her brain. We did not know if she would survive. The doctors diagnosed her with Shaken Baby Syndrome and she had a shunt put into her brain to drain the excess fluid.
My sister, at the time, was in the ICU at a different hospital with severe Pancreatitis and was unable to be with her. As soon as my sister was released from the hospital, Tonirae was put into foster care and it would be a year of misery as my sister did everything in her power to fight for her baby to come home. Finally, right after her 1st Birthday, Tonirae came home!! Tonirae's biological father was never arrested for this abuse! He was ordered to pay child support, which he is not currently doing. He was ordered to provide medical insurance, which he let lapse without telling my sister. My sister is doing the best she can, but cannot keep up. Medical Bills are piling up, as Tonirae has been in the hospital 6 times this year. Once she was in the hospital for a week. Twice, August 2nd and September 2nd, she has had to undergo surgery on her shunt.
Despite everything, this sweet girl has been through, she is surpassing all of the expectations the doctors had for her. She is an amazing little girl, so full of life! Anything that we can do to help her and her family is greatly appreciated. If anything, please keep her and her family in your prayers as they go through these difficult times.
