stay home instead of a nursinghome

Go fund me – Keep us home NOT in a “home”
My name is Patricia. I am married to Charlie.
He is almost 82 with Type 1 diabetes, for nearly 60 years.
I was Charlie’s full time caregiver for past 8+ years after vascular strokes affected his ability to manage his diabetes. Now ALS has stolen my strength and I cannot continue to manage our health issues. We’ve been married almost 55years. Now is not the time to separate us.
Charlie is confined to a chair due to severe spinal stenosis.
After 8 weeks in hospital & rehab facility we are home and our 3 adult children taking time from work to help us with daily needs. They have to travel 2-3 hrs to get to us.
In home help costs a minimum of $25/hr and we need 24/7 help.
Charlie is retired UCC minister and his pension & soc sec will not stretch far. We are very willing to sell this house in Maine to live near family. With his 40+ years of ministering to many thousands, we hope that those who can will now help him/us to carry on at home and not in a home.
To renovate a son’s house would be a good solution and that requires new handicap bathroom, plumbing, etc.
To private pay at a skilled nursing facility for us both is about $22,000/ month near family. If Medicaid takes over we will have to sign over all our income, and be left with a $70/month “allowance.” Worse than that is who knows what quality of care we would get.
Even though we spent nearly 8 weeks in a beautiful, new skilled rehab center this past winter with wonderful CNAs, they were understaffed, so help was not always available.
Our goal is to either stay here at home, or move into our son’s home (after renovations), and have visiting nurses, therapists, and CNAs assist with our needs, and then we could have our family just visit, and not be our caregivers.
