My name is April. I live the tiny house and off the grid lifestyle. I built my van insert last year and work from home. My home just has 4 wheels and rolls down the road.
I had several setbacks previously however I have finally managed to get my bills down to about $400 a month. I was able to get my nest egg to $550. I also, this past holiday season, managed to get my bills paid until late March which meant no bills for a few months other than gas and supplemental food (I have food storage).
I had given back my van that needed payments for a van that I thought was road worthy and had no payments. I have replaced several parts over this past year in this new to me van. I thought the van could handle the drive.
Unfortunately I was wrong. I just left Arizona to get to Missouri. My transmission broke. In the desert. 130 miles from a town. After gimping it in 2nd gear the entire way, I am now stranded in Las Cruces NM.
It looks like I may have to sell my van insert and loose the van as well. The lowest price for a transmission is $1800. There have been other quotes as well ($3500 all the way up to $7500).
I really do not want to loose the life I worked so hard to obtain. I built the insert with a good friend. It's killing me to think that I have to part with it and all of the things in it. I live bare bones and very basic. It has taken me years to come this far and now to be faced with loosing it, it's gut wrenching.
