Garibaldi IB Music student accepted to prestigious Berklee College of Music
Timothy Ro, a grade 12 IB Music student at Garibaldi Secondary School, is excited to be attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music next year. With campuses in Boston, Massachusetts and Valencia, Spain, and with 95 countries represented in their student body, Berklee is the preeminent institute of contemporary music and performing arts. Hundreds of Berklee students, faculty and alumni have been recognized with Grammy, Tony, Oscar and Emmy awards.
Timothy, a trained classical pianist and a self-taught jazz pianist, has always loved music. He enjoys playing and listening to any genre of music, from Pink Floyd to Kendrick Lamar to Bill Evans to Gustav Mahler. In addition to piano, Timothy plays guitar and percussion, and this year he was selected as a percussionist to be part of the British Columbia Music Education Association Honour Wind Ensemble. Naturally, Timothy is fully involved with Garibaldi Music, including playing with the Advanced Senior Ensemble and taking the IB Music course. Timothy’s lifelong dream is to become a composer/songwriter, and he is thrilled to be heading to Berklee to study songwriting, film composition and music production.
Getting into Berklee is no easy task. Students are admitted through a competitive audition and interview process that includes a prepared piece, improvisation, sight-reading, ear training exercises, rhythmic testing and an interview. Timothy feels that the IB (International Baccalaureate) Music program helped him to prepare for the audition, and for the rigorous studies he will undertake at Berklee. He also believes that his involvement with Garibaldi’s sports (Basketball) and leadership clubs (Student Government and Link Crew) helped him to be successful with his application. Berklee looks for students who can contribute to the university, something that Timothy has done in spades at Garibaldi.
Timothy would like to thank his parents, friends, and great mentors who helped him along the way. As Berklee is an expensive investment, any donations or sponsors would be greatly appreciated.
