This puppy needs you!

Tax deductible

Meet Kalina. This teeny 2 lbs 8 week old, SUPER SWEET puppy desperately needs your help. She is currently in the ICU at Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital— and despite our best efforts, we cannot afford the round-the-clock veterinary care needed to save her life.

As many of you know, Animal Lighthouse Rescue (www.ALRcares.com) has saved thousands of dogs from the streets of Puerto Rico and its infamous beaches (including Dead Dog Beach) . These "satos" (Puerto Rican street dogs) are treated as pests on the island and euthanasia rates in Puerto Rican shelters can be higher than 99%— meaning almost every dog that enters the shelter is euthanized. Because of the large number of unwanted dogs on the island, there are almost no adoptions. The only chance these dogs have is to be pulled from the streets, vetted, and brought to loving homes, is by the very few independent rescues, like ALR.

Kalina was found at just a few days old with her litter mates and mother. Her mom, a Shih Tzu, had her litter of puppies outside a school. Despite the best efforts of the schoolchildren who fed them, unfortunately her mother and siblings didn't make it but Kalina and her brother Kiko were fighters and survived.

We rushed the two puppies to the vet, where we bottle fed them and nursed them back to health for 7 weeks. When they were healthy and strong, supporters of Animal Lighthouse who were vacationing in Puerto Rico volunteered to bring the Kiko and Kalina with them on their flight back to NYC so they could start their new lives. They came into JFK this past weekend, in the cabin with the family, and went directly to a loving foster home. When they went to their foster home, they were running and playing, and had their first night in a nice comfy dog bed in a warm home.

On day 2, though, Kalina was sleeping a lot. Still her snuggly and super sweet self, but not as playful as her brother. By day 3, she went into our regular vet for a check up and her foster home was syringe feeding her every 3 hours, trying to get her to perk up. By day 4, her head was hanging low, and her cute personality was almost all gone. She would try to stand up to greet you but fall over, not strong enough to support her 2 lbs of weight.
We rushed her to the local emergency room at Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital on the west side, where they immediately accepted her into the ICU. She needs around the clock care, an IV, and a feeding tube to help her regain her strength and get better. She has so many families waiting to meet her. The only life she knows is living on the streets and then living in a cage. She deserves a loving family and her own happy ending.

However, vet bills are piling up and unfortunately we do not have the money to pay them.

Please help us save her!

Animal Lighthouse Rescue is a non-profit organization that depends on donations from supporters. Because of Kalina and our 150+ other animals in our care, our back up funds have been completely depleted. Because of this, we are asking for donations to go towards Kalinas medical costs, which are $7,000 and raising daily.

Any funds raised over the cost of Kalina's vet bills will go towards helping us save other dogs like her. These innocent dogs deserve a chance at life. The only thing holding us back from rescuing them is donations. Please help these dogs.
