The Tampa Heritage Initiative (THI) is raising money to build a Community Garden!
Our non-profit organization, Urban Progress Alliance, made a significant step forward with the property owner (Ms. Limehouse) of the lot we want to use for our community garden.
Here's the story:
Ms. Dorothy Limehouse, an elder, inherited some property in West Tampa. It was an old, slightly dilapidated, house. The neighboring property owners were calling code enforcement on the property in attempts to get her to sell it.
First we got the title out of probate and in her name free and clear. Then we contracted with Ms. Limehouse to demolish the house until it was feasible to develop the property for commercial use. We did the job for close to 70% of market rate.
Ms. Limehouse was pleased with the entire ordeal.
We also have been searching for a vacant lot to develop a community garden for most of 2018, in which, we found was more difficult than we expected.
We approached Ms. Limehouse with the idea of building the community garden on her lot and she is in agreement. She honored and signed our letter of intent to use the garden and a lease agreement. So now we are moving forward with the process of fund raising for pre-development!

The work of creating a community garden will not only meet individual needs by providing access to fresh fruits and vegetables in a community affected by food scarcity, but also create opportunities for community members to create and sustain relationships, develop community pride in their neighborhood and to become empowered to become indigenous leaders by encouraging them to take on teaching classes and managing responsibilities in the garden, all of which reflect the social work values of service and the importance of human relationships.
One of the purposes of this garden is to educate children on basic growing skills and cultivate a spirit of self-sufficiency within them. Gardening engages kids by providing a dynamic environment to observe, discover, experiment, nurture and learn.
We need your help raising money so that we can buy garden tools, plants and materials so that the Tampa Heritage Initiative can get started building the garden!
