The Walk a Story of Recovery

Donation protected
My name is Bill Moran,  I own and operate a energy management consulting firm. I am also a talk show host with a local community based radio station located in Valparaiso, IN.

As with all areas of the United States, our county, city and state have a growing drug epidemic. It would seem that the money spent on forming new agencies to combat the drug problem  is having little if no affect on the rise in deaths due to overdose.  Although there is not a quick solution to the mounting problem, there can be a beacon of hope to those who are struggling with addiction.

We are currently producing a radio show/podcast titled “The Walk”. “The Walk” is a show in which the guest, a former drug addict or alcoholic takes us on a tour of their life from childhood to addiction, to recovery to a changed life. Along with the tour of their life a selection of music that depicts their life season will be played in the background.

Many addicts are stuck in a viscous cycle with the onset of depression constantly near.  Many pick the short way out via suicide or taking the next step up to escape reality’s cold grip.

We as well as many counselors and interventionists believe that a life line is needed to draw these people battling addiction into a recovery program. We feel that the narrative of a life being changed from addiction to recovery to a changed life will be a powerful testimonial inspiring change.

The group that has formed to produce this show are all extremely committed. So much so some of us have put our lives and businesses on hold. Drug addiction has touched all of our lives in one form or another, be it a friend, family member our ouselves.

The show is currently underwritten to be broadcast on WVLP 103.1 FM in Valparaiso, IN. The station is a non-for profit low wattage community based station that is funded by donations. The underwriting covers the expense of airing the show, not the production or subsequent podcast nor the cost of professional services. Our intent is to eventually find local sponsorship that will assist in sustaining the show. However until such a time that sponsorship is obtained, we must seek funding from other sources.  The additional costs to produce the show are as follows;

Staffing Cost
Audio Engineer that will run the audio board during the show:$2000.00
Radio Station Staff to edit audio files for broadcast and podcast:$2000.00

Expenses for Host and Guests
Items related to the production of the show as well as other related expenses.  Our hosts will be stepping away from their current positions and/or businesses to help produce this show. This budget item will subsidize travel related expenses, food, conference fees, guest expenses, professional services, and expenses related to the formation of a foundation to assist with recovery expenses, as well as any unforseen production expense .  $6000.00

Equipment and Promotions Cost
Printing of Banners and Flyers: $600.00
Mixer and JK Broadcast Host w/microphones and headphones for remote broadcasts/podcasts: $800.00
Website licensing and domain registration.  $200.00

Total expenses: $11,600.00

In summary our group including myself have had our lives affected by drug or alchol addition in one form or another. We are passonate about our mission to save lives. It is our desire to create a beacon of hope throgh our show so that lives can be saved. At the end of each show we will mention the 24/7 staffed help lines that are available. It is our goal to staff our own hotline once we are assured we can provide such service equal to or better than the existing helplines.
