The Post Calming Room

$570 of $900 goal

Raised by 11 people in 13 months
Teenagers experience many stressors as they are moving toward adulthood. They must learn to regulate their emotions to manage these stressors so they may become successful adults. Studies show the ability to regulate emotions well can lead to better financial planning, lower rates of substance abuse and a decrease in violent behavior. Developing emotional regulation skills doesn't just benefit emotional health it benefits physical and interpersonal health as well.

One of our goals at the Post Youth Center is to teach these skills. In order to do this we strive to build connections  with teens. We desire to help them discover who they are as they navigate the struggles in life. We hope to provide a safe environment for our teens to spend time building relationships, learning about themselves and discovering purpose in their lives. Because we believe that Jesus is a perfect picture of love we work toward these goals within the context of a Christian community.

Like most teens, the ones we serve at the Post have experienced many struggles that can set them back in life. One survey some of our teens participated in showed the following:

81% of the students surveyed reported coming from divorced homes
59% have at some point received government assistance
59% have had a household member go to prison
44% come from homes with someone who abuses drugs or alcohol
63% have used drugs or alcohol themselves

These are just some of the findings that illustrate our student's need for skills to move beyond their circumstances to become successful adults.

In order to help us address these needs we are raising funds to create a calming space for our teens. This space is for our teens to engage in activities that will equip them with skills they need and to give them opportunities for intentional personal growth. This space will be a peaceful atmosphere including comfortable furniture, calming colors, and decoration designed to help students relax. There will be centers for students to talk with staff, to journal, to practice mindfulness, to share prayer requests, to participate in art activities, to read about coping skills, and to experience other activities that will promote resilience.

Your donations will help us to be able to buy the necessary supplies to create this space. Raising funds enables us to be intentional about the way in which we design the space to maximize the benefit for our teens. Your donations will provide our students with a place to learn the skills necessary to overcome the difficulties they face. Thank you in advance for supporting the teens in our community. We truly appreciate all you do to help our teens become successful adults that positively influence our society.

Thanks everyone for all your support! We are still working toward our goal of $900. If we find 20 people who will donate just 20 dollars we will reach our goal. Consider donating to our calming room fund. Here is a sneak peak into what goes on at the Post. This is a group hug at closing time last week.

Dear Supporters,

Thank you so much for all you do. We hit our initial goal of $500 dollars. We were overwhelmed by the generous support we received for our calming room. Your support enables us to create a space for teens that can help their emotions, relationships, home lives, academics and health.

Initially when we created our campaign we decided to ask for a small goal. In discussing this we were reflecting on our identity as a faith based organization. We are extremely grateful for what we have raised so far but realized we may have been limiting how God wants to bless our teens by setting this small goal.

As we were talking this over as a staff we looked at the numbers on paper. We created another list of things we would like and did some math based on average prices of the items on Amazon. The following is our current wish list:

-3 Weighted Blankets
-2 Pairs of noise canceling headphones (like what you use when shooting guns)
-Craft/Art Supplies
-Yoga Mats
-Notebooks/Writing Materials
-Bean Bags

Looking at average prices of these items we would need about $1000. Because of this we have decided to raise our goal to $900. We have the ability to DIY some things and intend to look for good deals on items.

We want this room to be sanctified, set apart for a specific purpose, in order for the students to be able to utilize it well and receive maximum benefits. We want our students to feel comfortable in the space and see based on the quality of the area that it is something we thoughtfully and intentionally designed for them.

What it boils down to is this- we love our teens. We see this space differently than we see the other spaces in our building. This is a space that will facilitate deeper connections with our teens and an opportunity to help them grow as people. Our teens face many difficulties and desperately need deep connections with caring adults to help them walk through them.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this update. Please consider donating to our campaign. If you feel led to donate any of the items on our wish list give us a call. Thank you so much in advance.

As an aside the calming room was covered by The Elkhart Truth.
