The Legacy Project of the QC

“Mom died last night” are the four words I heard from my dad when I woke up on a July morning in 1982. I was 11 years old. Those four words changed the course of my life forever. And while there was no bringing my mom’s body back to life, I longed to have her in my life.

Life from then on was different. And difficult. For the first few years, I was trying to wrap my head around not seeing my mom again (here on earth), but none of my friends knew what this meant – they had their moms. I desperately wanted her back. I didn’t want to be the “only one” facing this. As time went on, and I trudged through my teenage years, there were so many things I wanted to ask about her. I didn’t want to forget anything. Thirty five years later, the things I don’t know about her far outnumber the things I do know.

The Legacy Project was born to help protect the legacy of mothers lost by school-aged girls up through young adulthood. We see that the life of a mom should never, ever be forgotten, discounted or moved on from. The woman who loved her daughter more than life itself deserves to live on. Forever. And while this can be a daunting task for the adult family members grieving the loss of their loved one, our trained mentors and companions will walk along side motherless girls and young women of the Quad Cities. They will assist them in cultivating a lasting legacy while they navigate the journey of mother loss.

The Legacy Project is a gift to every motherless girl and young woman of the Quad Cities – and her mother.  We need your support to help us turn despair into healing and fear into hope.  Your monetary gift will make a difference in the life of motherless girls and young women. Through your generous gifts, The Legacy Project can fund its 501c3 submission, so we can fully operate as a nonprofit. We can fund our operating expenses, like training our trainers at the Center for Loss and Life Transition, with renowned expert Dr. Alan Wolfelt and his team. We will be able to solidify our branding, and increase our marketing efforts to expand our reach to embrace all motherless girls and young women in the Quad Cities. While we can’t make a grieving girl’s mom breathe again, we can keep her alive.
