Why GOFUNDME?  On Wednesday evening, November 23rd, after a great show with Lanterns on the Lake, we suffered a burst water main on the Ground Floor which sadly flooded our basement venue.

Unfortunately, as we were closed at the time, we were unable to stop a considerable amount of damage to our ceiling and floor as well as to the stage, soundproofing and electrical equipment.  Although we have managed to salvage some of our equipment in the short term, we are extremely fearful of the longer-term damage to our sound and lighting equipment. The extent of the staging and flooring damage remains an unknown quantity but will most likely need to be replaced.

Obviously, we were devastated! Fortunately Nik, our General Manager, was able to secure another venue Thursday evening for the Fickle Friends show at The Scholar Bar and managed to reschedule Saturday’s show with The Spitfires.

The Show must go on! As many who come to The Cookie regularly will know we have built up a strong reputation both Locally and Nationally, for putting on new, emerging and established artists in Music and Comedy. More importantly, we have always aspired to provide a clean, safe and welcoming environment for all gig goers. We have remained a 14+ venue throughout our development because we hope that, as we were, they will be inspired to go out and support live music and comedy, or to become artists themselves.

The Cookie has remained fiercely independent in the face of increased competition from other venues. We have fully funded the growth of the business ourselves over the last 10+ years which has come at great personal financial cost, but we have always been guided by our strength and determination to maintain a credible and clean platform for live performance.

Your support will therefore help to ensure that we try to mitigate any looming issues over the coming months. Together, we will continue to make The Cookie proud to represent the Leicester Music and Comedy scene both locally and nationally, but more importantly you will help guarantee Tinny the space to stage dive topless at many more fantastic gigs to come!

In return for your loving support we are offering the following;

All donors will be invited to a special thank you party at The Cookie in the new year and will receive a big hug from Tinny!

£10+ Two free tickets to be used at any of our selected shows at The Cookie in 2017 (£14 value)

Hello Everyone,

Just checking in with an update for the campaign and repairs.

We can’t say enough how grateful we are for all support we have received so far. With the funds raised we are able to move forward with the building work. We have secured a builder and agreed to a schedule of works to begin Jan 3rd - 13th. Of course that means the venue will be closed for those 10 days but hopefully all should be restored to it’s former glory.

If/when the insurance does pay out, a long standing friend of The Cookie has made a brilliant suggestion of donating any excess fundraising to a local performing arts charity from Friends of the Cookie! If anyone has any suggestions of a well deserving bunch we’d love to hear your thoughts.

Final quote for the repairs is £4880 +vat for floors, ceiling, paint & plumbing and £760 +vat for fire alarm which comes to £5640 + vat. That combined with our loss of earnings for the 2 events which had to be moved whilst the venue dried and additional insurance to cover the lost months paid due to our insurance provider (Gable) going into liquidation has meant that without your contributions we would have found ourselves in a very precarious situation.

Hopefully everyone will get to enjoy the benefits of their support with the gig tickets and parties we have offered in return and the fantastic line up of events we have in store for 2017.
As we said initially we will be hosting a thank you party for all of our donors in the new year after the work has been completed. We’re currently looking at end of Jan before the Leicester Comedy Festival gets underway but personal invites will go out once the date has been confirmed.

Thanks again so much for everything so far. We’re nearly there at £4081, only £1919 to go so please keep sharing xxx

A massive massive thanks to all that have donated so far.
Personal messages of support and donations from all involved has been well and truly staggering. From sharing our posts to offers of free labour to clean up the mess to donating hard earned cash, there really seems no bounds to the love that has been shown to us right now.
Having said that the fallout from the damage is now gathering pace. Our insurance company has gone into liquidation and that means we have to pay another 3 months coverage on top of the annual payment we already paid.
I'm staggered that an insurance company can go bust on you after taking your fees!
We have now had a new fire alarm fitted which has cost £750 but it goes without saying that we always have to put safety first. So thank you for contributing to make sure we achieve that.
The reality now is that we have to pay for all works to be done before we can go ahead and make any claim from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme and that is now our priority.
We have now raised £3846 but would like to increase this to £6000 in order to meet the costs that will be payable.
Early building estimates are coming in at around £4800 for the visible damage. Together with the alarm we are now looking at possibly £5600, so we have our fingers crossed that there are no unexpected issues once work commences.
This is a real challenge I know but our aim is to make sure that our venue remains at the heart of Leicester's music and comedy community.
Please share as much as possible and thank you once again. X

Hi everyone,

We just wanted to give an update on the progress of the repairs and of course say a massive thank you to everyone who has shared and donated to our campaign so far.

We knew business insurance would be difficult to deal with from our past experience and we knew we'd need to get repairs made asap to continue trading at the level I hope you've all come to expect from us.

We have been informed that our insurance company Gable, has gone into liquidation. They are backed by the FSCS so we should 'hopefully' be able to get 'up to' 90% of our claim. However, the process will take a lot longer than normal and could be looking at several months. Plus they are arguing over what is or isn't a tenant improvement; i.e. When we took over the space we put in all new floors, plastering, plumbing, electrics, stairs, windows, doors, etc. They have suggested an argument that those are things a landlord's insurance should replace and of course the landlords insurance (as we would agree) would say those items come under the tenants improvements. Either way we are at a standstill right now due to the insurance company going bust.

Thanks to your very kind and generous support we are able to move ahead with the necessary repairs. We have had builders in to discuss new flooring, the basement ceiling being re-plastered, plumbing repairs (to that nasty pipe that burst!) and a new fire alarm unit in the basement to replace the one damaged by the flooding.
As the stage will need to be replaced we are also making plans to raise it to provide a better viewing experience and will put a fresh coat of paint in the venue to get rid of any lingering fusty smells. Thankfully the sound and lighting equipment seems to have made a lucky escape!

Again we can't thank you all enough for rallying around. Your response has been overwhelming. Xxx
