Nepal Earthquake Relief Climb 2017

Donation protected
What are we raising money for?

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8M earthquake struck Nepal near the capital of Kathmandu. On May 12, 2015 a second, 7.3M earthquake struck.

Please watch the short video below.

Who am I?

My name is Tony Michaels, and I'm from Seattle, WA, in the Pacific Northwest. I'm a photographer/amateur mountaineer with a 20,000ft+ Himalayan summit on my climbing resume.

In April of 2016, I visited Kathmandu, Nepal en route to summiting my first Himalayan peak and witnessed the devastation there firsthand. The outlying areas of Kathmandu continue to need our help, and are still (a year later) hit with smaller aftershocks - one of which, a 4.5M, I experienced while I was there.

My view from the summit of Island Peak (Imja Tse, 20,310ft) in April, 2016.

How will the money be used?

The Climb For Relief

In April 2017, I'll be setting out on an expedition to climb Baruntse, a 7,129m peak in the Everest Region of the Nepalese Himalayas. At 23,460ft, it sits less than 6,000ft below the tallest point on earth, Mount Everest.

I'll be climbing without supplemental oxygen, carrying a Nepalese flag to the high altitude summit to bring attention to the suffering the people there have endured.

Half of your donation will be used to fund my expedition, and half of your donation will go straight to Global Giving, a vetted disaster recovery/earthquake relief fund. (please visit their site for more information - https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/nepal-earthquake-relief-fund/)

Baruntse is an advanced level mountaineering expedition: it takes around 33 days to reach the high Himalayan summit. Baruntse is a rarely climbed, but aesthetically beautiful mountain. While not a terribly technical climb, the altitude and a challenging summit day ensure I will be suitably pushed on this exceptional expedition.

The land cost for my expedition is $7,500USD, (this includes climbing permits, food, gear, internal flights, accomodation before the climb, porters to base camp, and Sherpa guides) and once we reach our goal, anything donated beyond that will go directly to Global Giving. I will be self-funding my international flights to and from Nepal, my high altitude mountaineering insurance, and all incidentals.

Donation of $1,000USD or above:
As a Gold Level sponsor, I will stitch your company's custom-made logo patch onto my down jacket and wear it for the duration of the summit attempt day.

Donation of $250USD or above:
As a Silver Level sponsor, you will receive a personalized note thanking you for your help after we're successful, and a set of printed photos from the expedition.

Donation of $50USD or above:
As a Bronze Level sponsor, you will receive monthly email updates on my conditioning and training leading up to the expedition, including photos and blogs of other mountains I will summit in preparation.

Donation of $30USD or above:
You will receive a high resolution print (shipped or hand delivered free of charge) of your choice of one of the following photos (all taken by me in Nepal). When you donate, in the "message" box, please indicate which photo you would like:

1) Island Peak Summit Push
2) Ascending in the Himalayas
3) Himalayan Backdrop
4) Rescue Chopper
5) Dakshinkali Monestary6) Sunrise over Mt. Everest

All donations are fully tax deductible.

Why does this mean so much?

Challenge
The earthquakes between Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Kodari caused extensive damage in Nepal. More than 8,000 people lost their lives in the earthquakes, and 3.5 million people were displaced from their homes. Our nonprofit partners are responding-more than 87 of them have asked for help funding their relief and recovery efforts for survivors on the ground.

Solution
All donations to this fund will support earthquake recovery and relief efforts in Nepal. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted local organizations.

Long-Term Impact
Global Giving believes that organizations that are deeply-rooted in local communities are often in the best position to provide long-term support for disaster victims. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger disaster-response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future disasters. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.

Help me reach my goal of standing atop a 7,000m+ peak for a just cause! Thank you for your help. The Nepalese people deserve it.
