The Caregivers' Club

$7,912 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 97 people in 6 months
As Producer and Director of the Caregivers' Club, a feature documentary about family dementia caregiving, I spent eight months researching and looking for participants.  During that time, I met, visited and interviewed many at-home dementia caregivers who were in the state of crisis.  They were exhausted and overwhelmed with the number of responsibilities and the inability to have any time for their own care.  In one house, a male spouse even asked ‘could you just take my wife to the bathroom for me this time.’  Dementia caregiving burns out family members.  There’s just no way around it right now.  Extra, private care is too expensive for most people so they hang on until they can’t hang on anymore.  There is an incredible need to provide extra help in homes.  The system provides some assistance but it is randomly scheduled and of course, there is not enough to go around.
This fundraising effort will allow us to explore, develop and implement a unique Caregivers' Club Family Relief Fund (working title).  We want to figure out a way to support caregivers existing in the most physically and financially challenging situations so they may hire private help at their convenience. This will allow caregivers to do something for themselves – whether it’s catch up on sleep, go to the gym, take a walk or sing in the church choir. These hours of respite can make or break a caregivers’ journey. This fundraising effort will also support the development of community engagement and awareness raising initiatives using the film. We want The Caregivers' Club to be used in a variety of settings as a professional development, advocacy, support group and community discussion tool.

It is with great sadness that the Caregivers' Club announces the passing of Sheldon Abramovitch. His wife Susan was his caregiver for six years and was featured in our documentary. Although death is the end result of this disease, it came suddenly to Sheldon. My deepest sympathies to Susan, Marcus, Aviva and Rochelle. Thank you for sharing your husband, your dad and some of your family memories. Thank you too, to everyone who is donating to our fund on behalf of Sheldon. This is amazing. We are meeting shortly with a potential partner to take on this fund as an official charity. We are excited and working hard to bring relief to some dementia caregivers. RIP my friend.

Dear Supporters and Friends,
We have formed an AdHoc Committee for the Family Relief Fund Initiative (including some of the documentary participants seen in the trailer below) and we are taking a plan to a number of Dementia/Healthcare Foundations and Companies for partnership so that we may turn this into a sustainable, charitable organization. If you know of any organizations who might be interested please let me know. In the meantime, stay tuned for the launch of our website! Thanks for sharing. Yours in service, Cynthia

Hello to the Caregivers' Club Family Relief Fund supporters! On January 8, 2018 we held a private screening of the film at the HotDocs Cinema. This is a short clip of the post-film discussion about the need for supporting dementia caregivers and the necessity of a fundraiser to provide grants for the most needy. Cynthia Banks is on stage with CBC Radio Host Tom Power and some of the participants in the doc. Thank you for your donation and please share this request. It costs a lot of money to provide private help to families for even a short while. You can watch the Caregivers' Club online at CBC Docs POV http://www.cbc.ca/cbcdocspov/episodes/the-caregivers-club

Dear Supporters,
I'm extremely grateful for the support you've given to the fund over the last 24 hours. Yesterday, I had my first conversation with Jackie Garrow, a Canadian Social Impact Producer. She's extremely experienced and just as passionate about this project as we are!! Jackie will begin a strategy and implementation plan to bring partners on board to facilitate the charity, host community screenings of The Caregivers' Club, engage in discussions across Canada, prepare educational kits, a website and strategize on ways to advocate to the government for changes to home care. It's a privelege to have Jackie on board and your donations are paramount to making this happen. We can't do it alone. It takes a village and we thank you! Cynthia
